Puppies and Rawhide

My puppy has a rawhide bone that's half the size of her body (stolen from my other dog who didn't care for it) and she's been working on it for a month....but really mostly the past few days 24/7 and it's all nasty and soggy and she's so proud of it....and it sounds so gross as she chews it. I gave her a blanket to eat it on but she keeps taking it to me. Ughhghhghghh

• Uhhhh Gross. That is why I will stick to cats. Their treats are small and get gobbled up in three seconds. Although my tiny tabby is pushy and will eat the black one's treats if he doesn't get to them first.
• We don't use rawhide because it can be really bad for dogs. We just use regular cow femur bones so they don't get too slobbery gross but they can still chew and clean their teeth.

• The worst is when my dog used to take hers outside, leave it there for a few weeks, then bring it back in all soggy and dirty. Dogs are gross. I'd still sell my kidney to be able to have one right now, though.

• Rawhides can be really bad for dogs.  Chef D is not allowed them.  We give him nylabone (although it's not his favorite).   His favorite are various bones from the butcher.  He goes crazy for them.

• One of my co-workers had an adorable basset hound puppy.  Unfortunately he died after chewing on a rewhide bone and becoming choked.  Because they get so soft and mallable they are able to choke on them easily.  I don't know how many times my dogs in the past would be eating one and make a puking sound from coughing it back up after becoming blocked.

I don't mean to scare you, Muppet.  But it made me think afterward whether I wanted to risk that.  So I stick with Nylabones now.  My dogs love the nylabones too.  Or anything they consider a treat.

Blech. Growing up, my brother's dog always had a soggy rawhide. It grossed me out all the time.

Same! They love to nom on the marrow.

• Another vote against rawhide. Muppet you are in NH (I was born there) so forgive me for being presumptuous, but I'm guessing you know some hunters...ask them to cut a piece of antler for your pup to chew on. They don't splinter or get soggy and my dog and my BF's dogs LOVE them because they smell like prey.
• Bones from the butcher tend to be cheaper, too. I actually use mine to make beef stock in the crock pot, then give the dog the bone afterwards...he goes nuts. So for about $1.50 I get a batch of beef stock and my dog has a bone for a few days (I usualy throw it out if it's too big for him to get all the marrow out of, it gets gross)

Funny that you mention that... Someone just showed me antlers that their dog is eating the other day.  I don't know an active hunter per se. My dad thinks he is an active hunter but with his injury, he just kinda sits off the road a bit and waits for a deer to come...unsuccessfully. But it doesn't mean I don't have connections to antlers!

I didn't realize rawhide had an issue.

<div>I lost a dog to rawhide and while I will never tell someone what they should and shouldn't do, I do have some alternatives.</div><div>
</div><div>Petco and Petsmart both have a section for antlers. They are high (like $15 for a good sized one) but my dog is an extremely active chewer and still in the middle of teeth falling out/growing in and he has not made a dent in it. At all. </div><div>
</div><div>Or, for my lab and german shepherd, I go to the butcher and ask for about a 4-5 inch section of the leg bone. My lab has damn near made his tongue bleed several times working on getting that marrow out. </div><div>

• Invest in some marrow bones, cow hooves, or bully sticks and toss the rawhides. You can find bully sticks, at minimum, at Petco. The others may be tougher to find, but you can ask your vet for recommendations to find the others. I tend to buy my elk antlers and marrow bones at dog shows. I also have friends who bring me deer antler sheds. Anyone who hikes or otherwise express nature can find them, not just hunters.
• Im going to go for antlers. I've been reading about these today.

They appear to make less mess too.

Yeah soggy nasty gummy gross chewy bone...ugh

I give my dog bully sticks they still get soggy but they do not splinter like rawhide.
• Do bully sticks gross anyone else out, or just me? My BF (she's the dog expert which is why I keep mentioning her) is a vegetarian and gives them to her dogs (plus the pigs ears and all that). Maybe I'm just weird but the idea of my dog chewing on that just skeeves me.

Dogs are carnivores by nature.  I don't think it's odd she give them to her dog(s).  I would think it would be wrong for not to give her dogs that kind of stuff just because she is a vegetarian.   There have been a lot of recall on food and dog treats,  It's more than likely safer for the dogs to eat pig ears than some treats made in China.

Chef D loves the all the stuff you mentioned.  He really likes cow hoofs, but they get to slimy for me so I don't give him that too often.  The rest of the stuff we give him.  We also feed him raw chicken, pork, beef, etc.

• My dachshund loves her nylabones. They get all prickly and stabby at the ends (she is really great at getting people to hold bones for her while she chews without them noticing until the stabby end is stabbing them too hard), but it's better that slobbery and gross. Plus I had a friend who gave her dog a rawhide that was knotted at both ends, and the knots untied, and he nearly choked on it. Then again, he was not a bright dog.

• I'd think it weird only if a vegan were giving those things to dogs
Yes but it doesn't change the fact that bully sticks, cow hooves, and pig ears are all byproducts of the slaughter industry, which moral vegetarians consider unethical. Antlers wouldn't surprise me, but those items do.
Posted by StageManager14
I understand that.  Most vegans understand that a vegan diet is not good for a dog.  Not only do they eat meat, bones and pig ears,  it's good for them.  Dogs who chew bones tend to have healthier teeth and gums.  So in order to own a dog or cat when you are a vegan you have to make concessions.

As I said before a lot of dog food and treats have been recalled lately with quite a few dogs dying.    The lesser of 2 evils might be for to get them for her dogs because they are still better than the alternatives.

I would hope as a vegan she would take the time to research where she is getting those items.
