Brainstorming Geeky Ideas for My Wedding!

So my FI and I are both nerds to a big extent, and I had an idea to do really cute robots on our invitations. Nothing too cartoony, but classy. I don't want to do a whole wedding with robots, ( my sister suggested that the bridesmaids and groomsmen wear antennas on their heads- I think that's just ridiculous) I'm low on ideas for other geeky/ nerdy ideas that aren't too much. We play lots of board games, video games, and we watch shows like Futurama and Star Trek. I am also a DIY bride so budget is important to me. I'd really appreciate any ideas you can all come up with! Thanks!

You could name your tables after characters , places, or factions on futurama or star trek. You can add a communicator thingy to the guys buttonieres.
You can have a themed cake topper. Check out Etsy for lots of good ideas.
You can also have a grooms cake in the shape of your fave board game.

I like the idea of the grooms cake in the shape of your favorite board game.  Or maybe get some of those mini board game things and put them on the tables at the reception for people to play with.  I don't know how expensive those are, but I know I would be super excited if I went to a reception with mini board games on the tables.

And I agree.  Having the BMs and GMs wear antennas on their head would be over the top.  You want to have fun with your theme, but you still want to keep classy.

I think a groom's cake or a cake topper would be good.  I think you could probably find a way to work something into favors or escort cards. 

You could get a Star Wars coffee table style book and have people sign that as your guest book.

But beyond that....I probably wouldn't do more.  A little theme is a good thing.  Too much and it looks like an 8 year old's b'day party.

We went to a wedding where they played the Mario theme song following the recessional.  It was cute.

We played music from Final Fantasy IX (My favorite game) during our ceremony (Including the "Victory Fanfare" as our recessional) and our BP entered the reception to the Theme From The Legend of Zelda (DH's favorite game).

Before we booked our venue, we had debated doing a Mario & Princess Peach cake, but then we found out our venue was giving us our cake for free, so we couldn't be incredibly picky with the design.

Something that I thought of waaaaaaaaay after my wedding (Or I would have done this), was I think it would be really cute to give out little boxes of Nerds candy for favors.

I think wearing robot antennae through the ceremony would be silly, but nothing stopping you from picking up some just for pictures...

Like Meg, we did Final Fantasy piano music as our prelude and processional.  Not many people appeared to recognize the music.  We also had the Final Fantasy victory theme played over our first kiss (which several more people caught on to).  That's all we did that was super nerdy, I think.

FI wants to wear a pinstripe suit and trainers like the 10th Dr Who David Tennant and I think it would be cool to have a Tardis cake topper. We are playing Final Fantasy Piano music for the ceremony from prelude through postlude. And we are just getting started with ideas.

Everyone had great ideas. I like the idea of doing something interesting with the grooms cake..
you could always buy a red dress, like the one Dax wore when she married Worf on DS9, and change into it during the reception.

I literally thought it just a few weeks ago, when I saw Nerds in the check-out at the grocery store. As soon as I saw it, I was like "OMG, that would have been perfect!".

Oh, well. For the record, we gave out little boxes of Jelly Belly jelly beans (Which is our favorite candy) in 2 flavors we really liked: Cappucino and Toasted Marshmallow (Try them together some time: delicious). They were a hit, and I loved them ... but I just can't believe I didn't think of Nerds sooner, lol.

Love the idea of naming the tables after shows or characters.  Or you could even do board games and the escort cards could be a piece of the game ie: property cards for the monopoly table (I've seen people do shells on the table and then the escort card has a shell that they have to match to find their table).  Also, I saw a post where the bride created yahtzee games as favors.  For invites you could do just a shadow of a robot so it's simple but it's a robot.  I was looking at farm designs like that originally.   My FI is a huge Futurama fan so his groom's cake will definitely have something to do with that.  Good luck!

ooooo Im getting good ideas from this too!  FH and I are also both nerds (we play computer and board games, we are both engineers, and he knows the original 3 starwars movies by heart)  I might end up naming tables after Starwars charactors and maybe grooms cake might be the millenium falcon...or a mt dew can.  Even better....do Nerds come in your wedding colors?

You could use computer chips or something with lilttle robots for the bouteniers. Perhaps a little robot holding a single stem of a tiny flower as the boutenier?  Or maybe you could have something nerdy/video gamey as part of your garter design?  It would be easy enough to find some sort of figure and sew it onto the garter.

You could have table names be couples from video games (Mario and Peach, Cloud and Aeris . . . or would it be Tifa? haha). Or you could use places (Hyrule, Midgar, and there are so many cities - Racoon City, Liberty City, Empire City)

I LOVE the robot idea for stationery.  I think that's so cute.  You can tie it in with SO many elements in a really clean way.  You can take the same simple robot icon from save the dates all the way through invitations, programs, and into decor with escort cards, menus, or things like napkin rings.  Here is a really cute DIY cupcake or dessert topper from etsy (great source if you're looking for DIY paper goods)

Even the groomsmen can have robot ties!  It can be subtle to unnoticeable during the ceremony, but once those jackets come off, the robots come out!

I'm going to order the phonograph ties and I'm using the same photo that's on the tie  for the invites. They're adorable and I'm giving them as part of the wedding party gift since I know all the guys will love to wear them again.

Let the music express the nerdiness. My FI and I are huge nerds as well, and Star Wars is a very important part of our lives, so when we are introduced at the reception our entrance music is the theme from Star Wars. You could do something like that.

If you are writing your own vows/ceremony, that's another great place to incorporate a lil geek in tasteful doses.

Your vows could feature quotes from shows/movies/books. "I promise to boldy go with you where we've never been before" or "I promise to guide you away from the dark side of the force." These's are kind of silly and you can probaly think of better ones I'm sure, but it's very personal/sweet/memoralable in a non-tacky way if there's 1 geeky vow mixed in with the more traditional ones.

You could also choose a reading from one of your favorite sci fi books, or even a quote/monologue from a show/movie.

This is pretty geeky, but if you are not very religious and a BSG fan (If you don't know the acronym, stop reading now), you could have the pastor ask everyone to say "So say we all" BSG style instead of amen. (I would have him preface to your guests why they are saying it, that this is something you love and share together and want them to be a part of).

Either way, the trick is to make sure thre's isn't too much. But a splash here and there I think is really endearing and personal.

i would have the boutteniores (spl) have an emblem from star trek name the tables after the countries in WoW FF or everquest, pick your poison.  and in the center pieces do little ufos floating in the flowers but not over the top.and request the best man and maid of honor toasts have a lot of under tones referencing things in games

What about little touches like scrabble tiles or other game pieces for jewelery and cufflinks? Or placecards in a shape that means something to you like the shape of a starfleet communicator.

If you're having a plated meal you could create a fun menu with quirky names for the items on the list.  Like name a drink on the list Slurm Sangria (from Futurama, of course!) Just make sure you list what the item actually is so that people who aren't in on the references can have fun without being scared.

Cufflinks + Etsy = amazing.  They have anything you could possibly think of for cufflinks.  I would have loved to have found some for the groomsmen for gifts, but odds are, none of them will ever need cufflinks again in their lives.

I also think the robot on the stationery is a cute idea.  Another place where Etsy will save the day!

Have fun with your garter and the cake toppers!  You can DIY both of these things if you're crafty!

Etsy.com had storm trooper (from star wars) cufflinks, mario cufflinks and the 4 houses at hogwarts from harry potter cufflinks. I'm sure they have lots of others too but those are the ones that are geeky that I have seen.
Also, the little robots that someone else posted that go in cupcake could be put in other things. Like centerpeices at the reception or even add one or 2 to your bouquet.
