Cake question

FI and I went to 2 tastings today. I will keep the names out so no opinions are biased ;-) We aren't going to meet with anyone else, just these 2 and should get the estimates within a week or so. Here is the thing....I liked #1 better -cake was very good and filing was just right, not too strong. FI liked #2 better -cake was not as good but filling was stronger flavor. We will most likely do either vanilla w/raspberry or vanilla w/lemon. Or a mixture of both where both fillings are in each tier. Choice #1 is going to be more $$ but about 100-175 probably. so my question is, what matters to you more, the cake or the filling?? (I think the filling should compliment the cake, not overwhelm you, but I also don't care for berries to much while FI LOVES them.) And were you and FI ever on different sides when it came to a vendor? How did you decide or compromise? Sorry this got a little long :) TIA!

DH is not a sweet guys by any means so when he got all into choosing cake flavors and fillings I pretty much gave him the reigns. To be honest, I don't know if I could tell you what we ended up choosing. I know it was delicious though. :)The filling is not as important to me as the cake it BUT the frosting is important. I do not like fillings that are overwhelming. Nor am I a big fan of fruity fillings. That reminds me - one of our fillings was raspberry but we had her mix it with a vanilla butter cream so it would not be as "fruity". Is that an option you could consider?

This is YOUR special day and you should never have to compromise. As a cake decorator myself, if the bride decides she doesn't like one component of my cake, I make a note of it and offer to meet her soon with another small cake for her to try with the combination she really wants. If you have a multi tiered cake, you can have your #1choice on one tier and the grooms on another. What matters to all decorators is that their bride is truly happy. Let them know about your concerns. DO NOT COMPROMISE.........it's too important. Trust me THEY WANT TO MAKE YOU HAPPY so you'll refer them to others. Hope this helps. Can you tell you hit my hot button?

I hate fillings...  I'm all about cake and frosting.  I'd actually cut out the fillings and eat the rest. And, there has been nothing to compromise on in my planning, FI usually says "I don't care" and I'm left to decide on EVERYTHING.  :)

Gabs- at the #1 place it was a raspberry butter cream, hence more mild, while at #2 it was raspberry cream, so it had tiny chunks which isnt really my thing... FI isn't much of a sweet guy either but he LOVEs raspberry/strawberry so he really likes the stronger one....while I am a fan of artificial flavoring hahah Denise - Thanks for the advice, I guess I hit a good spot? ;-) I never thought about asking them about changing it slightly...that is a good idea!

I think it's more difficult because you are considering different vendors. We only worked with Jacques and in the end we talked about our guests. Yes, DH or I might have liked something but we considered what the majority of our guests would like. We decided less people like "strong fruit" flavor and went with the more subtle buttercream. Good luck girl!

Neither FI or I was a huge fan of "fruity" fillings, so we went with buttercream filling on every tier, just different flavors.

DH was very into the cake thing... mostly for the frosting (it HAD to be country buttercream, the real sugary stuff which I was ok comprimising for instead of the french buttercream). To me I cared A LOT more about the actual cake and then the fillings. Ultimately you can eat around a filling you don't like, but who wants to skip the cake part. Maybe you can do different fillings? That's what we did, I really liked the berry and DH really likes the cream cheese for the carrot cake, so we got both.

How important is the cake to you? There was so much of the wedding planning that I did. So many decisions that I made. That when my FI expressed a strong opinion on anything I went with it. If it's no super important to you maybe let him make this decision. He will feel so proud of himself! And, whichever you chose will be delicious and your guests will love it! GL!

I agree with prior posts.  How important is the cake?  To me the look of the cake was more important than the flavor (although it still had to be delish).  We too only went to one place so we didn't have to compare similar flavors at 2 locations, but I would consider your guests and how important it is to you on the grand scheme of all things wedding.  My FI went with the flow with a lot of my decisions and cake was what he really enjoyed picking so with the guests in mind we picked 3 options. How is your cake being passed around?  Ours is set up near the dance floor with coffee so we could do multiple flavors and let people pick. Good luck

Ok so I broke the usual mold of the wedding cake. I am doing a box of 200 samples from Jacques all of 6 flavors.Being in the industry there are a few things I've stayed away from.  Tuxes, I see them every day and I have one hanging in my closet, so you will not see a tux at my wedding. Anyways back to the question I think they both matter!
