What color tuxes? :/

We just picked our bridesmaids dresses... YES! :)http://www.morilee.com/bridesmaids/bridesmaids/284 In grape. We are going to have a lot of blue accents to go with the purple (as well as silver). What color should the tuxes be? And ties and stuff? Originally I didn't care and was just going to go with black and solid ties to match whatever color we chose for dresses. But now I have seen lighter grey and even charcoal tuxes that looked cool. And I was thinking their ties could be blue and purple (striped or some pattern). Not sure if that would look good with the grey. Maybe I could only get away with that if we have black tuxes? Future hubby does not care, he will wear whatever (although probably happiest in a t shirt! Lol) so he is no help on opinions. His opinion unless he hates it, is "it's fine.". Also, we are going through tux rental at men's wear house. If anyone has any good ideas or has seen something neat from there?

Re: What color tuxes? :/

  • A tux in my opinion should only be black.   A suit, however, can be tan, black, grey, navy, etc.  Suits can be rented just as tuxes can be rented.

In the end, I think it depends on the formailty of your wedding.  If you are having an evening wedding I would go with black tuxes, but if you are having an afternoon wedding you can certainly get away with a nice grey suit.

And since grey is considered a neutral color, any tie or vest color will look just fine.

  • It's evening. I guess I should have specified. That would make a difference! Ok, so if I go with black... Do you think it would be ugly or just weird if I found ties in blue and purple stripes (or any pattern really, that will just be easiest to find probably) ? Or should they just be solid in matching purple to the bridesmaids? And can ties be long for a tux? They don't have to be bow ties do they? Sorry for so many questions, I know zero about tuxes ( as if you couldn't tell).
  • You can either go with long ties or a bow tie.  IMO, I think any guy looks better in a long tie then a bow tie.

Since black is a neutral color, anything will go with it.  Again, IMO, I prefer  a pattern to the tie, whether it be a multi-colored or pattern, or a solid color pattern.

Also, even though your girls are wearing purple, that does not mean that the guys have to wear purple.  For example, my girls wore green and the guys wore purple.  The two colors coordiante with each other so it looked fine.

Finally, my H and I went through Men's Warehouse to order the tuxes.  They were very helpful and have all the tuxes, vests and ties in house to look at so you can pick the color that works the best.

  • Thank you so much! I'm glad you had a good experience with men's wear house. :) It seemed like the most comvenient option for the guys. Thanks again for all your help! :)
  • I requested a sample of the vests, and they mailed it with a 40 off coupon for mens warehouse 40 off each tux. It was a few months ago but its worth a try.

Since a tuxedo is very formal evening wear, a striped tie is too casual.  If you want a striped tie, go with a suit.
  • You may want to go to the MW behind Bloomngdales on 3rd.  They seem to have the largest collection of tux accessories.

  • Black tux, white shirt, and black ties (straight or bow, whichever they prefer) are classic, timeless.  My best man wore a black bow tie with black and white polka dot braces.  My husband and his best man wore black straight ties and black vests.  All three wore black tuxes.
  • Originally we wanted to go with an evening wedding and the BM dresses would've been a dark purple as well. Had we done that, we would've gone with black tuxedos, white shirt, black vest/ties and had the GMs bountierres include the color of the BM dresses.
