Tuxedo and Necktie?

Our guys are wearing black tuxedos with white tuxedo shirts and black vests. My fiance and the boys prefer to wear neckties rather than bow ties. I have been looking around and can't find ads or pictures of anything of grooms wearing a tuxedo shirt and a necktie. Is this okay, or should the shirt be plain?

Re: Tuxedo and Necktie?

  • I think it's fine. My FI is wearing a black tux with a white tux shirt and white vest. He will be wearing a bowtie, but his groomsmen are wearing the same, except with a black vest and black skinny necktie.

  • I honestly am not a fan of tuxedos with bow ties, and neither is my H so he and his GM's wore neck ties with their tux's.

I definitely think tuxedos with neck ties are more common/in style these days then the classic bow tie. Unless you're having a super formal black tie wedding, the neck ties will look great!

My dad wore the same tux as DH and his GM's but with a dark blue vest and tie:

  • Just to be sure we're on the same page, I'm assuming that by "tuxedo shirt," you refer to the traditional wing-collar, pleated-front shirt.

Though that's the tradition, modern style has granted a bit more choice. A plain white spread or semi-spread collar would be perfectly acceptable as well. Keep in mind that your choice of long necktie and vest will not necessitate a covered/studded placket or shirt pleats.

If you decide to go the bowtie route, then absolutely a covered placket or studs is a requirement. Pleats, not so much (especially with the vest).

Either way, I'd say the other requirement for the shirt is french cuffs.
