Should I pierce my ears for my wedding?

It is really hard to find real pearl clip on earrings. I pierced my ears three times before the age of ten and I was always allergic to the earrings so I gave up. Now I am wondering if I should try again and try to see if real gold or silver earrings irritate me. Maybe I could try again six months before so if it dosen't work out I can buy some faux pearl and rhinestone clip ons?

I would not risk another allergic reaction by trying to re-pierce your ears.  Have you been to a Nordstrom in Orange County (Brea, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Laguna Hills, ...) to check out their selection of clip on pearl earrings?  The nordstrom.com website has a few pairs.

    Good luck!
  • If you have a nickel allergy that explains the allergic reactions. I'm allergic to nickel. The only metals that I can wear are Sterling silver (not silver plated), 18 or 24 karat yellow gold, titanium, platinum and palladium. Also I'd recommend going to a piercer if you'd like to get your ears re-done, rather than using a piercing gun place at the mall. You'll get a much cleaner hole and it'll heal more quickly with less pain.
  • If you want to, go for it.  I had to pierce my 2nd punch 3 times before I realized they weren't healing because I was having a metal allergy reaction.  I can only wear gold or silver, and nothing plated (had to be the real deal!).  The last time around I paid extra for gold studs to be used in the piercing and everything healed up just fine.

  • Agree with PP's.  I can only wear sterling or gold.  I have a reaction to anything else.  I think it's worth another shot if you're seriously considering it.

  • I wouldn't risk your ears being red/irritated. If you've never worn earrings, I'd suggest wearing clips ons or nothing! I'm planning on borrowing diamond studs my father gave my mother when I was born, but they're teeny and I doubt will even show in pics.
  • Agree that you should be able to find clip on earrings that will still look nice even if they're not real pearls.  Or a jeweler might be able to put them on a clip for you (not sure how much this would cost).  If you do want to try re-piercing your ears and see if you are able to wear real gold, definitely do it way ahead of time and give yourself time for them to heal and make sure you're not having any problems.

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I had bookmarked these pearl magnetic earings on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/95760143/magnetic-freshwater-pearl-earrings-clip

I had my ears pierces as a child and I always found the earings very uncomfortable to wear (my ears must be too close to my head or something, I was constantly being poked by the posts).  I feel like I should wear earings for my wedding, but at the same time I know I'll hate wearing them.

I agree with the PP who suggested going to a body piercer if you decide to get your ears pierced again.  Those guns uses at the mall are incredibly unsanitary.  A good body piercer will use sanitized, one-time-use needles and you'll hardly feel the pain.
  • I second the people who say go to a body piercer, absolutely NOT a place that uses a gun.
You'll be much, much less likely to have a reaction to surgical steel.  The piercer might even have some more ideas for ultra sensitive skin.
But I'd go way sooner than 6 months. I'd go ASAP if you decide to pierce your ears.
Ears take time to heal, then it takes time to get used to wearing various earrings, so all said, the earlier the better to make sure that you heal properly and are used to earrings by your wedding.
6 months should be sufficient, but I wouldn't want to take any chances.
  • Thanks for all the great advice. I should have said in my post it is hard to find real pearl dangle rhinestone or diamond clip on earrings. I am seriously considering some Thomas Lane faux pearl clip ons but when I see real diamond and pearl pierced earrings for almost the same price it makes me consider piercing my ears.  If I do, I will defintely go to a piercer! My previous piercings were all from the mall. Thanks again.
  • just search online, to see if there is any great looking earriings. i won't pierce the ear just bcoz of wedding, it look the same in photo and no one will question whether it's real or not. i have a rich friends that was so scared to wear the real diamonds necklace and earrings set (too many people, scared  will lost in the crowd), that she ended up wearing a fake one. and no one notice.
