Ivory Wedding dress with white BM dresses?

I've already told all the BMs that they can pick their own short, white dresses.  I've just begun dress shopping and have found myself leaning more towards ivory for my gown.  Would this look odd?

Re: Ivory Wedding dress with white BM dresses?

  • Many times against white, ivory will look yellow.
  • If you know any photographers you might want to give them a call for their opinion. When you get your outdoor photos done, the difference between the dresses probably show more clearly in the photos. Will that make your ivory dress look dirty? Will the light bounce off of the white dresses and make them look very bright while yours glows differently?

I don't think you need to worry about how it will look in "real life" but you may want to consider how it will photograph. Definitely don't want your dress to look dirty in photos. White is so tricky.

Can you go to the bridal store and try on your dress and get them to put a white dress beside you so that you can see what it looks like? Then get someone to take a photo for you to look at before you make your decision?

  • Usuall only the bride wears white. It is up to you but I would not have the bridesmaids wear white. Maybe a very soft pink or blue that has a lighter undertone.
  • I know that usually  the BMs don't wear white, though it has become increasingly popular (royal wedding, Kardashians, etc.)  We're having a beach wedding and all the girls are different shapes and ages and I wanted a light color that would be easy for them to find a dress in.  I've seen photos of BMs in white and love it for my beach wedding.  I think it would be a huge challenge to find pink or blue dresses on their own, since I'm staying away from traditional BM dress boutiques.

Thanks kate and poppy, I haven't bought a dress yet so I could still potentially fall in love with a white one.  I just emailed my photgrapher about the colors in photos, which is a great tip since the entire wedding is outdoors!

  • I don't care for it, personally... But I think if you get it in a different material and a deep enough ivory they can look different enough that it will photograph well.
What made you want your BMs in white?

I also worry that a bunch of white dresses... on white/yellow sand... I mean.. that's a lot of light/white color for photograhs. I would worry about it looking a little washed out. Something to consider..

I agree with kate that in "real life" it will look just fine, but the photographs are the lasting piece of the wedding.
  • I emailed our photographer so I'll see what he suggests.

I wanted a clean, light color that would be easy for everyone to find on their own.  The only colors I can think of that work are black or white.
