Alterations

I'm worried about how much alterations will cost. All any of the bridal stores can tell me is it depends on what needs to be done. I picked my dress and i know that it will need to be hemmed a couple of inches at the bottom (they will need to remove a lace trimming at the bottom and then sew it back on) and I am a size larger in the chest than anywhere else so they are going to have to take it in about a size almost everywhere else. Other than slight beadign around the bust and the lace and slight beading around the bottom the rest is essentially plain with a medium sized train. Does anybody have any idea how much the alterations will run? I have my mind set on the dress so the price isn't going to change anything, however it would be nice to have an estimation. I'm also wondering should i go with the bridal shop i bought it for to get my alterations (Alfred Angelo) or should i go to a dress shop that specializes in making custom gowns?I just ordered my dress and I'm worrying about everything now. Even though i love the dress i am stressing that the alterations will change the appearance of the dress.

Re: Alterations

  • It all depends on where you live. Alterations vary. Also, I would recommend on asking your local board for recommendations on independent seamstresses. They are usually much cheaper than the bridal salons.

  • First, where do you live? You might get better suggestions if you post on your local board and get recommendations for an excellent local seamstress. :) I live in the DC area and just about everyone seems to go to two particular ladies for alterations, both of them are far more reasonably priced than most bridal shops, and they cap their price for alterations. In my area, hemming usually starts at $75 for bridal gowns because there is so much volume. It will probably be more than that because of the lace. Nipping it in slightly at the waist and hip will probably cost anywhere from $50-100.Don't stress about the alterations changing the appearance... the alterations will just make it fit YOU perfectly.
  • Also? We have the same wedding date! :)
