Which city should I buy the dress in?

So I'm planning my wedding long distance. It is scheduled for July 31, 2010. I am flying home for a visit in November and thought that would be a good time to go dress shopping with my Mom. I plan on buying a dress at David's Bridal since they are nationwide. If I find a dress there on my visit, should I get it there where we'll be getting married or should I get it back at my place? I will be coming back in April of next year to finalize details so if I get it there I can have alterations done and keep it at my Mom's. But if I need any alterations a couple weeks before the wedding I wouldn't be able to do it unless it was at my place? Then if it is at my place, that means I have to lug it on the plane with me when I fly out for the wedding. Any suggestions?

Re: Which city should I buy the dress in?

  • That's tricky. I think you should buy it where your mom is, it's seems to make the most sense.
  • I planned long distance too. I went shopping with my mom and BMs and even found my dress there but I ordered it here. You should have your alterations done as close to your wedding day as possible because your body can change in the last month before the wedding (mine did, I lost a bit of weight and had to have it altered). Since it's Davids, then you should have no problem ordering it in your city.

  • I did a long distance wedding and was so glad that I bought my dress where I got married, where my mom and family live.I just made sure to have the seamstress I hired on call the week before the wedding so that my alterations could be done.  Then again, I only needed a bustle and hemming but I suppose if you need anything major it might be more of a problem.I just know it was nice to not have to lug my dress on a plane when I flew down.
  • Another long distance bride-to-be. I've ordered my dress where I am living since a) I don't want to wait to do alterations last minute b) I want to be able to have the dress on hand to try/match shoes, accessories, etc.I'll probably be going a couple weeks before the wedding. I'm also only able to go visit about every 6 months or so.
