YIKES!! MY DRESS HAS ARRIVED TOO EARLY! WHAT TO DO?

Hi Ladies,Well I'm getting married in April 2010, and I ordered my dress from Alfred Angelo about a month ago. I just got a call that my dress is already at the store, which completely surprised me!! The lady said I don't have to pick it up right away, but obviously I wouldn't want to take it home (FI & I live together, don't want him to see it). I want to get it bustled, and hopefully that's the only alteration I'll need (it's got a corset back, so it should fit fine even if my weight fluctuates), and I was told I should allow 2 months for alterations. So how long should I wait to make an appointment for alterations with the seamstress? And how much can I expect to pay for bustling? Please let me know so I don't get ripped off. Thanks!

  • See if they can keep it stored at the salon for you until it's time to go for fittings. Or ask your parents or a friend to store it safely for you.

  • More than likely you'll need to pay for shortening of the dress as well.  I'm 5'9", and my dress is still overwhelmingly long- by a good 3 or 4".  I can't help with pricing, because my wedding isn't until June 2010.  Is there any reason you can't keep the dress at your place?  Will your FI be so tempted to peek that you can't keep it there?  My dress has been sitting in our closet for quite some time, and he really has no desire to look.  Truth be told, you forget it's there after a while.Anyway, if you absolutely can't keep it with you, what about with your MOH or at your parent's house, if they have room? As for the alterations, you won't need to set that up until 3 months before the wedding.
  • I am 5'10" and luckily with 3" heels I don't have to have any alterations. The bustling only cost me $45 and took 2-3 days.
  • I am in the same situation! I ordered my Alfred Angelo dress at the very end of June and it came in last week! It was not supposed to be in until November! All that needs to be done is the bustle, so I took it home until I get that done in February probably. Luckily my FI does not want to see it, and we have separate closets, so it is in there for now. Maybe take it to a friends or parents house? If I were you I would be excited it was here early, after all of the horror stories I have heard I am just relieved that it is here and in perfect condition so I do not have to worry about it!
  • I'm not getting married until May, and my dress came in two weeks ago.  My bridal salon won't even allow me to do alterations until a couple of months before the wedding, because your body may change in that time...and my dress is a corset back too.  You still never know.  I'd keep the dress at a friend's and make an appointment for alterations in January to give yourself enough time.

  • Thanks for all the advice ladies! I think I will see about holding it at my grandparents' house (I asked FI if he'd look for my dress if I brought it home, and he immediately said "yeah...")I'll check with the store if I can do alterations in January; hope it won't be too expensive...
