Too early to look at dresses?

Hi, ladies! Our wedding date was originally in May 2010, but due to some unexpected circumstances, we've had to move it back to May 2011. It is too early to look at wedding dresses if I'm not ready to actually buy one? I've heard a lot of people that are in the "it's never too early" camp, but if I can't afford to buy the dress when I try it on, isn't too early to be looking? If I try on a dress now, but can't buy it until next year, wouldn't it (being two seasons old) probably be discontinued by then?

Re: Too early to look at dresses?

  • I would wait.  You don't want a) fall in love with a dress that's going to be discontinued and b) fall in love with a dress, buy it because you're worried it's going to be discontinued, and then fall out of love with it.I just looked at pictures online for the first 5-6 months of our engagement.  You're pretty safe that way.

  • There is no hurt in looking at dresses online and in magazines but I wouldn't go try on dresses until it gets closer. I have been very anxious to go try on dresses since I got engaged too but I am holding out until atleast November..Looking is fine, but I would recommend staying away from the boutiques :)

  • This question comes up every now and again, and there are always different opinions...which makes sense. I think it's okay to start looking for dresses in order to see what general style you like, but I wouldn't buy the dress for another 8-10 months or so.  If you find one that you like and it ends up being discontinued, you'll just have to find another dress.  It's a matter of can you live with that?  Because I totally could.  I love my Maggie gown, but I could be happy wearing another 5-10 Maggie or Midgely dresses.

  • Take it from a girl who knows DON'T BUY YOUR DRESS EARLY. Because I bought mine like over a year before my date (I'll be engaged a year and a half by our wedding) and now I"m having second thoughts about it, hence the dress for sale. This happens with a lot of girls that buy too early. Go about 10-9 months before your date to actually try on dresses, because trust me if you go to look, you'll just end up buying one..like me..*lesigh*

  • I think looking at dresses and trying to figure out what style you'd like to wear is a good idea, but it might be too early to actually shop for a dress.  New styles will come out and you don't want to be stuck with a dress you thought you loved but you found something better.  If you can't even afford to buy it now, more of a reason not to go shopping for one.  I say have fun looking around at dresses for now in magazines or websites to look for styles and familiarize yourself with designers or what not, but wait a bit before actually going to to bridal shops trying on dresses.

  • Personally I would wait to look at dresses. The problem with looking now is that if you fall in love with a dress you have to decide to either buy it now or wait. If you buy it now you run the risk of becoming a 2 dress bride if you stumble across another dress a year from now that you like even better. Or if you wait to buy it you run the risk of the dress being discontinued and not being able to find it anywhere. And, since we're not even into 2010 yet this is a serous possibility.
