How do I find a store that carries my gown?

Okay, so I'm totally new at this and this may sound silly, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to hunt down a dress that you see in a magazine?? I know that you can search to see where that designer sells their dresses, but do the retailers carry all of that designers collection to try on? If not, do you have to call the retailer to request they order the style you want to try on or are you just out of luck until you find a retailer that carries the style you want? Need some assistance please! Thanks!!

  • I'd just keep calling until  you find a shop that has it.
  • I would call around if there is one dress that you are in love with and want to try on. If no one has it you may have to have it shipped to a store that carries that designer which means money. Sometimes a store that carries the designer but not that dress will have dresses that are similar so you can at least get an idea of what it looks like on.

  • Call stores in your area who carry that designer (their websites will usually tell you what designers they carry), and ask if they carry that specific gown. Or call the designer's office and ask which stores in your area carry that sample. Or see if they have a trunk show coming up (they usually have a lot more of their samples than the salon will carry). Even if the salon says they don't have it, bring a picture with you anyway. I inquired about a dress by name at one salon and they said they didn't carry it, so I showed the saleswoman the stock photo to ask if they had anything similar. Then she said, "Oh, THAT one! Yeah, we have that." She was confused because the salon used a different labeling system than the designer's names. Your local board may also be able to help you ... I also knew to ask at that salon because, once I saw the website picture and knew I wanted to try it on, I remembered that a girl on my local board had worn the same dress. From there, I looked in her bio and found the review for the salon where she'd purchased it, and sure enough they had it in stock and I wound up buying it. So show your local board a picture of what you want and ask if any of them have seen that particular dress during their own shopping experiences.

  • Just keep in mind that the "perfect dress" in the magazine can look a lot different on a body.  My daughter was soooo disappointed that "the dress" looked like total crap on her.
  • I definitely agree with the poster who said that dresses will look totally different on you than they looked on a model. It's difficult to judge the dresses when they're being modeled by super tall pre-pubescent girls. Based on the pics on the runway models, I wouldn't have touched my top 2 dresses with a ten foot pole, but they looked fabulous on me.
