Need help finding a flattering silhouette!

ok, so here's my deal: i have a somewhat curvy body, 34DD chest, 27 in. waist, with a large butt (not sure how many inches, but i know it's at least 36) and i'm only 5 feet tall. So here's my dilemma, i have no idea what kind of silhouette would look ok on me and what would look funny if i tried to get it hemmed so it was shorter

Re: Need help finding a flattering silhouette!

  • Are you fishing for compliments or something? You should have no problem looking gorgeous, but as with any important and very expensive article of clothing the best way to figure out what will good on you is to try stuff on.
  • no i'm not fishin, it's just that i know that things that are made for taller people tend to fit me funny, that's all
  • there are a billion petite brides out there....i'm not totally sure we needed your exact measurements, but anyway...

have you worn dresses before?  you should know, somewhat, what styles look good on you.  but the only way to know, as pp said, is to go try stuff on.  bridal consultants are usually very helpful in the process as well.
  • Go out and try dresses on and narrow them down from there. Strangers on the internet can't pick the perfect dress out for you.

Try some things on and keep an open mind!

I know that V-necklines can be very flattering on ladies with bigger busts, but these can be hard to find. Also keep in mind that with your height, you'll either want to avoid lace and embellishments of the hemline, both of which can be hard or impossible to hem well, or you'll want to use a designer that does hem-to-hollow ordering.
  • As some other knotties said...you must go try them on.  I liked a certain style of wedding dreses, until I tried them on...then I quickly changed my mind.  You know when you look good in something and feel pretty...you won't need any website, or person, or 'guideline' to help you with this.    Trust yourself...you will know what looks perfect on you.
  • I am not even 5' tall.  I agree that you should avoid embellishments on the hem.  I intentionally did not try any of those on.  Also, I was convinced that due to my height a-line/ball gown would look terrible on me.  I tried on mostly fit n flare at first.  What did I end up with?  A full a-line.

I agree about purchasing a designer that will do hollow-to-hem ordering.  My salon gave me the option of doing that, or ordering it as-is and have them hem it.  They advised I pay the extra money to order hollow-to-hem, as it would cost more for them to hem it there.

  • Sounds just about like me haha. I'd stick to a mermaid or ballroom.  I originally went with mermaid until I found a strapless ballgown.

I would say if you want your figure to show, mermaid would be better...for something a little more conservative I would go ballgown.  Straps can be optional but make sure the dress is something you think you can dance in without fidgeting to stay covered up.

  • You may also be able to have dresses ordered with up to 3 inches off without altering the look of your dress.  That was the dilemma I faced and they told me right away, even though I still need it hemmed.

  • CaylaSummer   yep - that's me and my fiance for Halloween this year.  Thank you!  We had a lot of fun dressing up the part and I swear in another life I was born in that era - haha.
