XP: Flowers Help

Hi Ladies,

I know this isnt the flowers board, (and there actually is one) but you are all so style savvy I wanted to get your opinions. Ok so quick rundown, wedding is April 13th at a Country Club, ceremony is outside, colors are Navy Blue, Purple (Davids Bridal Reqgency) and purple.

The main flower is the blue/purple dendrobium orchids. I love love these (plus they are the flowers Fi and I wore when he took me to my senior prom.AWWWW) Anyway the boquet in the picture below is my dream boquet, but my florist is concerned because of the way orchids grow that the stems will show through the top, so she was asking me what if any other flowers I would be ok with adding to provide coverage. I do not want roses, though I have scoured the interned and the white stephanotis with saphire colored gems look pretty, but wanted to see if you all had any other thoughts? Thanks in advance for yoru opinions.

  • i was gonna suggest Hydrangeas too. i have regency as well and Hydrangeas come in many different colors. you can probably use both blue and purple and since they come apart, they are perfect as fillers.
  • I don't think your florist is very knowledgeable then.  That bouquet was made by using the tips of the orchid stema and then wiring and taping individual orchids and then bringing all the components together into a bouquet shape.  It was not made by keeping all the orchids on the stems.

I think your best option is what other posters have recommended, hydrangeas.  Hydrangeas can be dyed a deeper blue color (if they do not come in dark enough) so that they fit in seamlessly with the orchids.

  • Thanks ladies,  Maggie- question, the way she explained it to me was she showed me a long stem with all the orchid buds on it, and said we would need to cut them, probably in thirds and place them all together, and was concerned the cut stems would show. Is that not the right way to do it? (sorry I am really dense in this area)

  • Hmm I'm not sure of the method, but surely the florist would have been able to make suggestions on flowers.
I went to my florist completely un-knowing about flowers, told him I wanted fall colors w/texture and that I like Orchids and Calla lillies and he came up with amazing ideas with very little help from me.
I love Hyndrangeas but I would also ask the florist for some suggestions, and she should have some pics to show you of things she has done for some inspiration.

I am not saying that the way she wants to do it is wrong, I just feel it is the lazy way and now she is trying to find a way to cover up her laziness.  I used to work as a floral designer for 8 years.  Many times when using orchids and you don't want the stems to show you will need to wire and tape the orchid buds separately.  Orchids are hardy flowers and will definitely hold up in this way.  I just feel she is either not well versed with orchids or she doesn't want to take the time to wire and tape (which is time consuming) individual orchids.  I also don't think cutting the stems in thirds will give you the desired look you are going for anyways.
