Dress Shopping

I am getting married in a little over a year, I have an idea of what I want for my dress and my mom wants to make it. I have found pictures and we've even picked out a pattern.  Its a very plain design and will be very easy to make. I'm just wondering if I should go shop around for a dress, and try some on before I make my final decision so when the time comes I know that's what I want? What are your opinions?

Re: Dress Shopping

  • What you have in your head and what looks good on you may be very different.

I've heard a lot of girls come on here and say they ended up getting the exact opposite of what they went in looking for. It may be a good idea to do a little shopping. Cant hurt.Good Luck!

  • I totally agree. It can be easy to fall in love with a picture on a website or in a magazine, without knowing it's really the dress for you. Do a little shopping, figure out what looks fabulous on you, and then borrow from the dresses you love to customize your own look. Good luck!
  • Yup, totally didn't think I would choose a slim form fitting dress, but that is what I loved and looked best on me. Try some on before you decide. Get a good mental pic of it bc a lot of the bridal shops won't let you bring in cameras unless you can sneak one in. Good luck
  • go try on dresses, you might change your mind about what you want, also while having a parent make the dress is very speacial shopping for a dress with your mom is a unique experience
  • I think you should try on dresses too.  It sounds kind of silly, but I know when I tried on my first dress was when it really sunk in that I'm getting married.  Plus, as PPs have said, you don't always like things on you that you like in pictures.  Like I had a dress picked out online that I loved, and when I went to try it on, it looked horrible on me.  On the opposite end, I didn't really look at any empire dresses because I felt sure they'd make me look super pregnant (which I'm not, but I do have a bit of a pooch), but when I tried one on, it actually looked really good on me.

So my advice is just to try on dresses and play around with necklines and silhouettes, just to make sure what you want is what will look best on you.  GL!

Totally agree with PP, try on dresses first.
