White or ivory?

What are your opinions on a white vs an ivory dress? I am ordering my dress online and have to choose. I have a medium caucasian complexion with light brown hair and blue eyes. My brides maids will wear red dresses and carry yellow flowers. My groom and his groomsmen will wear grey suits with red ties. It will be June. Does any of this matter? I can't even tell the difference between white and ivory. Help!

  • Ivory is a more creme color. I vote white against your FI grey suit but it is up to you in the end. GOOD LUCK!

  • Ivory is more forgiving to most skin tones, and really doesn't look all that that "off-white" in real life or in pictures.

I'm pale with brown hair and blue eyes, and white just looked really awful on me.  Ivory warmed up my skin tone and wasn't as harsh.  However, different designes have different definitions of "white" and "ivory" so it can be hard to tell.

Have you tried this dress on?  Was it white or ivory and how did it look on you?

My gown only came on ivory so I didn't have a choice, but I think it looked better anyway. Ivory is less harsh and some shades of ivory are so light that you'd never tell.

  • This dress is being made in Utah and shipped. I won't be able to try it on until it arrives in November. I can return it, but I have to choose white or ivory first. I'm taking a real gamble, but its the ony style that I've fallen in love with out of everything I've seen. I can try on other dresses in white or ivory locally, but I have a terrible sense of color anyway. Was just looking for others' opinions.

I suggest you do this anyway. Terrible sense of color will not matter when it comes to this. As soon as you try each color on you will know what looks better on your skin. I also suggest you find something similar to what you are buying to make sure the style looks good on you.

It'd be a lot of waste to keep shipping and ordering. Do some research close to home before you go through the hassle/money.

  • I made my decision based on what would make the features of the dress look better. It has as lot of beading and bling and on my particular dress it stands out more in white than ivory.

  • Can you ask who ever is making it to ship samples of the fabric?

Like you said, I can usually not tell the difference unless the bride is wearing ivory and has a white veil on and even then it's not a big deal. However there are a few shades of ivory that border on yellow IMO and I wouldn't want that color ivory.

In general though, I vote ivory.

  • Think about your skin tone.  Ivory is much more flattering on a person who is pale, wont wash you out so much.  White is best on women with medium to darker skin tones

<div>This is not necessarily true. It's about pink vs. yellow undertones in the skin. (OP, go to a make-up artist if you don't know which ones you have). I am super pale but looked a million times better in white over ivory because my undertones are rosy.</div>

  • You really just need to go to a bridal salon and try both on.  You'll know instantly if the white is too paper white for you.  For me, I went with ivory.  I didn't even know it was ivory until the saleswoman told me.  But I look back at pictures of me in a white dress and it was just too paper white for my skin tone.
  • If you cannot tell the difference between white and ivory against your skin in a fitting room, try to get in the natural light if possible.  Honestly, though, this may be an instance in which you want to take one trusted person with you who has your goal in mind -- pinpointing the best color -- when you make your final decision.

There are so many different shades of white and ivory that it's impossible to make a recommendation without seeing you in your dress.

    Best of luck!
  • You don't even have to go to a bridal store - go to your local fabric store and tell the person there you need to see **type of fabric the dress is** in ivory and white, then drape a slack of the bolt across your shoulder like a shawl on backwards and see which is better!

I am a pale redhead with hazel eyes and I thought for sure I'd like ivory over white, but when I tried some dresses on I found the white was generally better on me.  Very surprising!

I'd recommend trying some dresses on yourself and seeing how they look.  Or as someone suggested, any fabric of those shades should help.  Although I think if you can try on dresses and get a real idea, it would be best.
