Re: show me your emerald gemstone e-ring!

  • This is a warning since most people who are searching for an emerald ring don't seem to know much about Emeralds and their properties...

-Emeralds are soft. They will crack, chip and scratch easily. They are not meant to be worn daily.

-Because emeralds are seldom found without fissures and
surface cracks, it’s common for them to have been oiled, waxed or filled with
resin. Because of the likelihood of those treatments, special care is called
for when cleaning and handling emeralds.

-remove your emerald ring when doing dishes
or immersing your hands in water as soapy solutions and hot water can damage
the finish on the stone. Finally, avoid sudden temperature changes which could
cause color change and cracking in your emerald.

-Use warm water with a very mild detergent and a soft brush
to clean your emerald jewelry. Between washing, clean emerald jewelry with a
soft, dry cloth. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaner on emerald
jewelry, and avoid harsh chemicals. Every 2-5 years, have an experienced
jeweler re-oil your emerald to keep it looking its best.

I am not telling you not to select an emerald engagement ring, but  really think long and hard about if this is what you want. Consider a green sapphire if you are basing this on color. It is more durable. If you end up getting an emerald engagement ring then make sure to take it off for showers, dishes, cooking, the gym, cleaning, swimming, work (if you might knock it easily).

Here is mine - an emerald cut emerald.  Note that the setting really protects the stone (the top of the metal on the setting is higher than the stone).  Beryl (mineral family it belongs to) is fairly hard, but the structure of the mineral makes it susceptible to cracking due to exposure to temperature extremes.  My stone was taken from an estate piece of jewellery from the 1920s and did not undergo modern treatments to fill cracks, enhance colors, etc.

I love mine - I am not a diamond girl.  I am a geologist by training and a hunk of carbon had no appeal to me.

  • I second sapphires! Mine isn't green, it is sort of lavender, and I love that there are no diamonds in my e-ring. Just the sapphire. However, green sapphires are pretty rare and they are usually not the same kind of green as an emerald, but still beautiful! Sapphires are a little sensitive to scratches and stuff, too, so my setting is a semi-bevel kind of deal that protects the stone pretty well. The pic I have isn't that clear:

This exactly.  Emeralds are soft.  They are a 7 in hardness on the Mohs scale.  Diamonds are 10, sapphires and rubies are 9.  Sapphires and rubies are good choices if you don't want a diamond.  I wouldn't recommend an emerald as an every day ring.  Think of all of the things you do with your hands, for the rest of your life.  You will soon see lots of abrasions on the top facets and edges.
  • Emeralds are beautiful, but not ideal for an every day ring, unfortunately. If you're worried about getting something conflict free, I would check out brilliantearth.com. They have conflict free diamond and sapphire engagement rings.

Beryl (emerald) Mohs hardness is actually 7.5-8.
