Bridesmaid dress - long or short in June??

What is the "rule" for bridesmaid dress length for a June wedding?  I found a really cute knee-length dress, but I've been told that the bridesmaid dresses should  be full lenth or tea length at a minimum because the wedding is after 6 pm (and short dresses are too casual for a night wedding/reception).   The wedding will be outside at 6:30 pm with reception following indoors.

Re: Bridesmaid dress - long or short in June??

  • I may be out to lunch, but I always see long bm dresses are appropriate for more formal weddings, while short bm dresses convey the attitude of a more informal / relaxed wedding.

My girls will be wearing dark purple, tea length with straps in July. :)
  • i am not sure about any rules re: length of BM dresses.  I thought that full length are appropriate for formal weddings and shorter dresses for less formal/casual weddings.  Also, it depends on personal preferences.

My wedding will be in June, outside (weather permitting) and followed by a reception indoors.  My girls will be wearing long dresses.  My intention for the wedding is black tie invited.

  • My wedding is June....we are doing knee length dresses.  However, that is just because it was my preference.  Pick any length you want...based on the formality and your opinion.

If you choose a long dress, you could choose a fabric that is lighter thus making them seem more season appropriate! Have fun!

  • i think the lenght depends on how formal not when, if you wanna do a really formal one than full length is fine, depending on the temp nothing can ruin a wedding more than a bridesmade that complains who uncomfortable she is

  • I think you could easily go with short one's in the evening as long as it's not likely to get really cold in the evenings where you are.  They'd be like cut cocktail dresses at the reception. Plus it's easy to dress stuff up with fancier shoe's jewelry etc.
  • I am doing knee length, lavender cocktail dresses for my BM for our June wedding. The ceremony will start at 6:30pm and will be indoors - since you are outside (and in Austin) it will be extremely hot....however if your event is formal/black tie then the longer dresses will fit the formality more. It just depends on your wedding style.
