BM dress dilemmas...

Hello everyone!

So I am having a little bit of a dilemma...I spent quite a bit of time searching for BM dresses and I found one that I really like.  It is in the following link:

The top will be slate and the bottom will be black.  The reason it was so difficult to find BM dresses was because I was looking for the slate color (preferably in some type of luminescent taffeta).

So the dilemma is this...I have two BM who are larger.  One is normally a size 16 and the other is normally a size 12 (street size).  They are both beautiful girls and I don't want to take away from that by putting them in a dress that will look bad...Will this dress look good on them?  The dress only goes up to a size 24...will that be big enough?  I say this because I know that these dress sizes run so small...

Another dilemma deals with the back sash on the dress.  When we were looking at the dress, we crossed the sash around the back and tied a bow in the front and to the side...looked very nice.  But I don't think that the sashes will be long enough to do that on all of the BM (particularly the "larger" ones).  Would it look ok if two BM's did the sash in front and two did the sash in back? And perhaps to make them differ even more, they could wear the spaghetti straps??

I'm really needing some opinions here...It was so darn hard to find these BM dresses...now I need to figure out if they will actually work.  Thanks in advance for your advice!

Re: BM dress dilemmas...

  • IMO I do not think that dress will be flattering on the larger girls. I would most def keep looking. I had the same problem finding a dress that would flatter everyone because I have a couple of girls with very large chest and I made sure they tried on the dresses before I picked one. I was very glad I did this because a couple of the dresses look horrible on them and would have been very distracting at the wedding lol.
  • Wow, I had no idea I was considered "larger" at a size 12, but thanks.

Keep looking for dresses. Those are ugly. And I'd stay away from shiny fabrics since they tend to accentuate curves on all body types.

  • dresses that are two toned like that can make even tiny girls look bigger, it's a cool idea, but two toned dresses are hard to pull off, how about a black or one color dress with your accent as a sash maybe somthing in a strapless a line or tea legnth a line?
  • I think you're approaching this whole process backwards. Don't pick stuff online and hope it'll work out ... let them try stuff on and see how it looks on their real bodies.

If you haven't done so already, call or e-mail each BM and ask for her budget. That way, you will be sure you're not choosing anything out of their price range, and running into problems when it comes time to pay. Watters is in the $200 range, I believe ... are your BMs O.K. with paying that amount of money?

Schedule a shopping trip with whichever BMs can make it. Tell them ahead of time what you are thinking of (color, overall style, formality level) so they have an opportunity to speak up if they're concerned about anything. Pick out a few dresses in their price range for them to try on, see what looks good, and work from there. Nix any slihouettes or colors that don't flatter them, and stick with the things that DO work.

If some girls can't make it, or if you live too far away to go shopping with them, e-mail them 3-5 choices in their price range that you like, and give them a couple weeks to find local salons where they can try them on (be sure to pick designers that are widely available). They can e-mail you their votes from there, and majority rules.

    Ditto!  I feel rather offended.

And dresses are usually 1-2 sizes larger than your street size, so the size 16 girl would be fine with dresses than went to 24.
  • My daughter has 7 bridesmaids that range in size from 5"0' to 6"0' and from a size 4 to a size 24.  For that reason, she is having them purchase any black dress that they feel looks and fits best on them.  They will try to have the dresses be similar or alike in fabric for the sake of continuity.  Each bridesmaid will also have a "pop" of pink somewhere....but again, because each dress may potentially be different, so too may be the pop of pink.  One BM may have a sash or bow; another it may be pink jewelry or a pink headband.  They will all wear pink shoes; the jury is still out as to whether the shoes will match or not.

IF, as theory goes, your BM's are typically your closest, dearest, oldest friends.....I would hope the goal is to be as considerate as possible.

This, honestly. Please don't ask for the opinions on a board. Ask your BMs. They'll be the ones wearing the dress. Try it on with them. Let them be honest with you.

I hope you don't say something to the girls who are sizes 12 & 16 about them being 'larger'. Seriously? I am a size 16 and wear a 14 wedding dress. With bridesmaid dresses I wore the same size (16). I know a cpl of my girls had to go up a size or two but not four sizes...
