Re: Corset vs. Zipper which one

  • Holy guacamole, corset all the way.  100000000%

That was the first alteration I had done when I got my dress.  There is no way that I want to be agonizing over wether that zipper will zip.  Corsets are both flattering and forgiving of weight fluctuations, up and down.

  • I had a zipper.  Getting dressed took three seconds - hop in, zip up.  My only negative was that the back didn't have a pretty corset or button look, but I really didn't mind.  Here's the back of my dress:

My sister has a corset.  We knew how to lace it up the day of the wedding, but we were super slow at it.  The photographer, who had done lots of weddings, hopped in and did it.  Thank goodness or we'd probably still be standing there doing it.  It also needed to be tightened throughout the night so it didn't fall down.

That said, my zipper dress loosened during the night and I didn't have the option of re-tightening.  Dresses will loosen as you wear them.  Was it a big deal?  Not at all.

I think you need to ask yourself - do you want the back to be gorgeous or do you want ease of getting in and out?  There's no right or wrong choice!
  • There's no wrong choice, it's your preference.  I absolutely loved my corset back though!  It helped give me a waist and I never worried about my dress not fitting.  My dress stayed in place the entire night, never had to tighten the strings.  So happy I went with corset!

  • If you're undecided, try on a few. You may end up falling in love with a dress so much that the back doesn't matter.
FWIW, I had buttons, but my dress came with a silk slip, so it wasn't weird looking.

i LOVE my corset back. It's really easy because if you loose or gain weight you will still be OK.

And its a nice addition to the back

it also depends on your dress style though.

  • I went with a corset because I really wanted to add pink to my dress so we replaced the white ribbon with pink ribbon.

  • If you want your waist to look ultra teeny go with the corset. I love the shape that corset backs give to dresses. You may also want to consider it if you have a strapless gown. It might help it stay up better

  • My dress came with a zipper but David's offer's the option (for a nice price) to change any dress from a zipper to a corset back. I'm sure there are other seamstresses that can offer the same option. So don't let the back be a deciding factor on the dress you love.

I had mine switched out for the reason many of the girls mentions. It will be more forgiving of any slight weight gain towards the end. I've been going up and down within 5 pounds lately so I thought it would be safer.

  • My dress has a corset back, I don't love the look ( I'd rather have buttons) but I want my dress to be super fitted and make my waist look as tiny as possible, so I thought the corset would make it easier to tighten. Plus I know my weight fluctuates so the corset is the safer route! I was between sizes, so I ordered the larger size so that they can tie the corset closer together and it won't show as much.

Oh wow! I love this idea! A simple one, but I hadn't even given it a thought before.

My dress is going to be a corset back. That was my main requirement. It'll probably be the only dress I'll ever wear that has a corset back - mostly because other attire with corsets really wouldn't be my style. Plus my dress def is a princess-type feel (Essense D1042), so the corset fits well with that.

And agreed that it will be forgiving with any change in size, plus will look great for any pictures of your back! I was just at a wedding this weekend and was actually surprised how many pictures the photographer took of the bride and groom's backs.

  • I am definitely going with corset! I love it, I love the shape it gives, and I kind of hate zippers anyway.... but there are absolutely gorgeous zippered gowns, and I'd never ever think twice about 'oh... she went with a zipper?' when looking at someone else's gown. Just for me, the corset has all sorts of advantages in terms of looks and shaping and forgivingness, so that's the route I want to go!! Plus as a PP pointed out, if you want to, it makes it easier to add some colour - one of my friends got married last spring and had the ribbon in the corset bright pink to match us bridesmaids. She adores bright pink and it looked fabulous on her! (Not my style.... but it so totally fit her!!! I might do a pale green :P but probably not)
  • corsets are great for fluctuating weight but if u have big boob, zipper all the way! i have big boobs and ive found corsets tend to get looser at the top at tighter at the bottom the more u move. so if you need the dress to be tight at the top to keep the girls in you end up having to fuss with it alot. with zippers there is no wiggle room. which is a blessing and a curse.you have to watch your weight gain/loss but you also will not have to fuss with strings and slip-age all night. personally im going with zipper. but its whatever will work best for you.
