Bewildered about Bustles

I've seen a lot of posts here about needing to add a bustle to a gown. I know what a bustle is, but how and why do you add one to a gown? I tried searching for "bustle" on TK but couldn't find any articles that explained the basics. Do all gowns need bustling? Will this be something that the bridal salon consultant will mention when I go for my alterations?

If you have any type of train (even if it's a sweep train) and you're having dancing at the reception, you'll need a bustle or your dress will be stepped on and you'll be yanked back.  Your seamstress can pin up your train different ways to show you your options.
