Wedding Colors

How many colors are too many when it comes to choosing a wedding theme?? For the longest time I have had a fascination with peacocks, and even have one tattooed on my foot. I want my wedding colors to incorporate that, so I've chosen turquoise and royal blue, as well as hues of purple, green and brown. As far as bridesmaid's dresses go, I want them to choose the style of dress in any of those colors, but when it comes to decor, I wonder if all those colors together would be over-doing it? Any advice/input would be appreciated!!

Re: Wedding Colors

  • I think that sounds fine, since they are all tied into a "peacock" theme.

When you are using many colors and/or styles, the challenge is to create a cohesive look. Some brides create cohesion by requesting similar style gowns, others by similiar length dresses (mini vs knee vs floor-length) others by similiar bouquets.  Tying in a theme (like peacock) to all elements can also help create cohesion.

I used a single color (blue) but asked people to find a dress they liked in that shade of blue.
  • I am having a peacock wedding as well! My main color is a rich purple which is the color of the BMs dresses, my shoes, and the lighting in the reception. The bouquets and center pieces will be a mix of purple, blue, teal, and white. There are tons of peacock ideas out there on TK, Etsy, and even if you search "peacock wedding" on google. I am trying to make sure my wedding isn't overrun with peacocks!
  • I am doing a peacock themed wedding and I'm using the teal hue for my bridesmaid dresses. I plan on using some navy in my decor as well. I think as long as you tie all those colors back to peacock feathers somehow you should be fine :) I thought about choosing a different color for each bridesmaid but they all loved the teal hue.

  • I would use the same color/length for your bridesmaids dresses, but have them pick the style they like. I like not having a set color, but making sure everything coordinates. I think it sounds really pretty.

  • I would pick one or two of your colors as the main decorative pieces (table cloths, perhaps), and then accessorize with the rest. I think this is a great way of achieving the cohesion Mag mentioned, and of keeping your look tasteful. You picked very bright, bold colors (which is great! I hope you post pics when the time comes!) so it's important to maintain a balanced look.

Have you thought of going to Lowe's or Home Depot for paint swatches? This might help you refine your idea of what specific hues you'd like, and might give you a better idea of how to balance and incorporate them.
  • I had four colors: teal, eggplant, amythest, and burgandy. I actually had peacock feathers in my bouquet...here is a quick ic of houw it turned out, PM me if you want more pics to see it in your head a little better...
