help! confused and frustrated

I've picked out two dresses that I love and cannot choose between them.
The first one is one my family loved. Unfortunately I would have to buy the sample, which is about a size too big. I really love the fit an flare dresses, which I'm sure is possible with some alterations. This is pretty close to what I thought was perfect.

My FI wanted to be involved in picking a dress, so we went out a couple weeks ago. Every dress similar to the first one was all right. But the really dramatic dresses really caught his eye. I started questioning if I wanted something not so simple, and fell in love with this dress (ignore the face, I got no warning of when the pic was taken):

Any opinions on which one looks better? I know people say go with your first instinct but I'm at a loss right now.  We're getting married in the backyard of an old mansion, so I wanted something vintage looking.

  • love both on you... but the 2nd one definitely is more unique so my vote is for that...

But go with what makes you feel the most beautiful

  • I think both are nice, but I vote #1 as the second one is NMS.  Good luck!

  • My vote is for #1.  Alterations can be done and it will fit perfectly once they are completed.  I purchased a sample dress and it was big in parts, but she put the pins in and I have a true idea how it'll fit.  Go with what makes you feel most beautiful and get the dress YOU want..  GL!

  • I'm no help then because I like #2 on you.

  • My vote is for number one.  It is chic and elegant and I think it would go perfectly with your venue. The second dress is also lovely, but I think its too busy.  There are too many elements going on - the lace layers, the embellishments, and the beading, and IMO it is distracting (I'd notice the dress but not the bride).  Good luck!  Hope this helps and doesn't further frustrate you!
  • Ok, being totally honest here- I think you have a great body, but #2 makes you look hippier than you are. I think #1's shape is more flattering to your figure, and for that reason I prefer #1. I  DO love the drama of #2, but I think you'd be better off in a ball gown or dramatic a-line, because I think #2 makes you look a bit wider than you really are, which is something we all strive to avoid. Both of them are lovely and you look great in BOTH of them, so really, I'm nitpicking, but being totally honest.
  • i totally vote for number 1. it's classic and simple and people will focus on you not just the dress. i normally like things that are different but i think number 2 is a bit too different. there's a lot going on in the skirt that i think it's detracting from you. add some drama and flare with your veil/accessories.
  • I vote for dress #1. I agree with the above. The cut of dress #2 isn't as flattering for your figure as dress #1 is.
  • I think the first dress is boring personally... it did nothing for me.

The second one I think is def more intersting and has the vintage feel you are looking for. if you fell in love with it, I think you should buy it! just make sure you aren't buying it simply because FI loved it.
  • number two would fit the venue, i love it!!! and you look gorgeous in it!!!
  • Ohh I think the first dress is beautiful
  • Personally, #2 is NMS at all, but I also think that it is the less flattering of the two on you.  There is a lot going on with the second one, and it doesn't really scream vintage to me, if that's what you want.

The first one looks great on you, but I don't know if it will look as good if you take it from an A-line (or was it just too big?)  to a fit and flare.  I guess my question is, is this about what you want to wear, or what your FI wants you to wear?
  • I like #1 better on you as well - not sure if you're fed up with dress shopping, but I would defniitely look for a cross between the two now that you know which fits best on your body and what FI likes. Maybe a silhouette similar to #1 with a vintage flair like lace or ruffles like #2. Sorry, I'm sure this isn't particularly helpful. I think you're onto something with the first one, I just don't think it's 100% there yet if you're looking to go a bit more unique/dramatic.

  • My vote is for #1. It's classic, and I think you'll be a lot happier looking back at your pictures with a dress that compliments you better.

  • the second one is better.
  • The first one is undeniable best on you. The second one is more unique, but what ends up happening because of that is all you look at is the dress- not the bride! Truthfully, all the eye is drawn to in that second one is those hard horizontal lines in the skirt. The woman should be wearing the dress and not vice versa. It's a common mistake in gown shopping to go for the "wow" dress and then end up being completely overwhelmed by it or ending up with something that isn't really very flattering. This is an excellent example of that.
  • I like the first. It may not have the vintage feel you're going for all by itself, but keep in mind that you'll be adding accessories to it. The right accessories can really set off the look.
  • I like #2 because it's different, but you should really just think about what makes you happy because you dont want to regret it later- you only get to wear a wedding dress once! (Hopefully!) ;)
  • while i am typically an over the top magpie, and absolutly love the second dress , I think the simplicity of the first dress looks more flattering on you
  • Thanks for the opinions girls! I wanted a more objective opinion than I would get from my FI/family. While I do like the second one, the more I look at it the more I think its not me. My mom pointed out that I tried on two other dresses that were similar to it and didin't like them as much as the more simple one. I know the second one would really wow people, but I think it might overpower me since it is a lot going on.

I find number 2 a lot more interesting. The first one is pretty, but how many brides wear the same kind of thing? I don't necessarily find number 2 too overwhelming. I'd say try it again after doing your hair and make up, and the effect will be different.
