Hem Length

How long should your dress be with your shoes on? I am a tall girl, so I didn't get my dress hemmed at all, thinking it would be perfect with short heels since it was just barely dragging on the ground without them. But now, with the heels I have, it is about 2 inches off the ground. Is this too short? Should I find some shorter heels?

Depends on the dress, really but 2" off the ground is probably wrong for any dress.  Do you have a pic?
  • I'm at work, so I don't, but I will post one when I get home. It is strapless and slightly A-line with a chapel-length train, if that is helpful...

  • If it has a train it should brush the ground.  I'd look for shorter shoes.
  • My seamstress did 1" from the ground and I felt like it was too short.

Ditto PP"s, I think you might want to try and find shorter heels.  I'm also tall, didn't have my dress hemmed at all and it was the perfect length with flats.

ETA - ok, in looking at pictures I probably could have gotten away with a kitten heel.

  • It depends on your opinion more than anything!  I'm 5'11" and found gorgeous 4 & 1/2" heels that I had to have and while the front of my dress is a bit off the ground, maybe an inch or so it doesn't bother me a bit.  When I showed the gal doing my alterations she actually said it's best to have the dress off the floor if you plan on dancing at all (we have a very upbeat choreographed dance for our 1st dance).  She said SO many brides these days want their dress to skim the floor but it's not practical in any way.

She also made a great point - who, besides you, would notice?  Who is going to be looking at your dress toward the floor?

  • I think that the front of your dress should just skim the ground.  I am not a big fan of seeing brides with a dress that was hemmed where the shoe is seen the whole time (unless it is a tea length or shorter dress).  Every time I see this I immediately think that the seamstress made a mistake and hemmed it too short.

IMO, I think you should find some shorter shoes.
