Tanline woes

I'm worried about tanlines.  my dress is strapless.  the simple solution would be to avoid the sun, however I am planning to do a century ride for a cause I care a lot about 3 weeks before my wedding. I'm worried about a bike-jersey tan, or a sports bra tan.
I'm fair skinned and when i'm not doing athletic events that keep me in the sun for 6+hours I don't usually tan at all, and since i've never gotten married before tanlines have never been a huge concern.
help! suggestions!

Can you wear a long sleeve shirt on the bike ride?  I know it will be hotter, but there won't be tan lines.  Otherwise, I'd suggest a ton of sun screen, and maybe some kind of tanning/bronzing lotion to even  yourself out?  Or just a nice trip to the beach in between.

I feel your pain.  I got a strapless bathing suit, and have already been more vigilant than ever with applying sunscreen anytime i'll be outside.

Maybe some sort of long sleeve underarmour top would work for you.  They have a line that is supposed to keep you cooler right?

I feel like a total Bridezilla for reminding my cousin, who is a bridesmaid,  to be aware that her dress is strapless. . . she is half italian and usually has INSANE tanlines from swimming all summer.  I feel horrible and petty for saying something to her!

Why would you say anything?  Who cares if she has tan lines?

OP - I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'm going to have tan lines on my wedding.  I cycle, too, and I wear a sleeveless jersey most of the time that leaves some pretty awesome marks on my shoulders.  Just wear a ton of sunscreen, and maybe pop into a tanning bed a couple times afterward to even it out if the sunscreen fails?  You could always get a spray tan, too.  That would help.

I can understand why you WOULD say something! She will be in all of your picures and would look pretty bad having very noticable tan lines with a strapless dress!

  • I could wear a long sleeve shirt....but 105 miles at the end of June that could be a long ride. I'm thinking SPF 55 sunscreen and changing the type of shirt I wear throughout training ( short sleeve, long sleeve, sleeveless...). Perhaps I'll hope for an overcast day. Is it bad that I seriously considered not doing the ride?

  • And as far as saying something to your BM, that's tough...my MOH is doing a marathon in a few weeks and the tan lines are unavoidable, however I'd never ask her to stop running, clearly something she loves, just as I love cycling.

  • I'm a distance racer too I have just accepted I'm going to have tan lines. I really dont care its part of the sport and a badge I wear with honor. Anyone who has issue with that can eat me, because its my day and I'm rocking my dress because of that hard work.

Do the ride!  What cause are you riding for?  Curious.
I think you have a good plan, lots of sunscreen and changing your shirt throughout the day.  Good luck!

It was only a breif moment of hesitation. The ride is for Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports.  My cousin is a child who has spent a lot of time doing theraputic riding and adaptive skiing, and he has loved every minute of it!

Maybe get a practice spray tan. . . . if you like it you could always do that for your wedding day to even out any tanlines you might get from the ride.
  • Try the powder bronzer called Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder.  It will blend out those tans lines really easily and works with lots of skin tones.  I have taken it to several weddings as a bridesmaid to cover up tan lines.  (I also use it so I don't have to buy two or three shades of foundation in the summer.)  Just be careful with the wedding dress since it's a powder.
