I had a metal comb. I didn't really find it heavy at all but I also think that mainly depends on your veil length and how many layers your veil has, plus an additions such as lace, ribbon, beads, sequins, etc.
I liked the metal comb because I was able to bend it so that it had a nice curve that worked well with my hair and the shape of my head.
As of right now mine will be single layer to my elbows maybe fingertips with scattered pearls.
Where did you find yours? Metal is harder to find it seems.
My hairstylist specially told me to get a veil with a metal comb. I guess it holds better. I did get one with a metal comb - it was very light and held in my hair great. I bought it on Etsy from a seller called AlisaBrides.

I actually made my veil. I bought the metal comb, tulle and what not at Joann Fabrics. It was a one tier fingertip veil with a raw cut edge. I didn't add any additional details because I just wanted something super simple.
You could buy a veil that you really like and switch out the combs if you are feeling handy. or you could buy a metal comb and take your veil to your seamstress and have them switch it out for you.
I have a hard time with metal combs. For some reason the plastic works better in my hair. My hair is very thick, but also rather slick. So it seems whenever I put a metal comb in my hair, it slides right out. I coated the plastic comb of my veil in hairspray before putting it in my hair and it held fabulously. I think you almost have to try both to know for sure.
