gown suggestions for my body type

Sorry, no pic. But I'm 5'2". Have a 36C cup. Waist is...well...I'm working on it. Hips 40" (you do measure around the butt, right...it is my fullest part). So I'm short and curvy.

What style of dress would look best on me. Mermaid would probably make my butt and hips look huge. Empire? A-line?

What about the bustline...halter? Strapless?

The one in my siggy (even though I am in LOVE with it) probably won't look good on me because it would overwhelm my body because I am short. Any suggestions?

Re: gown suggestions for my body type

  • I have the same body type almost exactly according to your measurements.

Gown I wore (picture in bio....can't find it online anymore!) was A-line with ruching.

I LOVED the gowns I tried on with a little assymetry/side-ruching; it was curve-flattering.

I think once you find the "body" of a gown you like, you can see if you like it as a strapless or maybe would prefer to make it strapless, etc.

My challenge was not as much with the neckline!

Example of other dresses I considered that had ruching & seemed to NOT make me look short/tree stump like, just to give you an idea:

and a MS I can't find that was very similar to this:

Try on the dress you love; you could be surprised! :) Good luck.

  • I think A-line in flattering on almost everyone.  If you're curvy, I don't think empire will emphasize that.

I absolutely LOVE the dress in the last link! HA! Just went back to look at it again....figures it's a MS. All the dresses I have been looking at are MS. I am probably going with that as my designer because I love that romantic look. Thanks!

  • I tried on the dress in your siggy (I think it's SaBelle by MS) and I'm about 5'3 with similar measurements...and the dress was gorgeous but swallowed me whole. It made me look shorter because of all the detailing on the bottom.

Mermaids also made me look shorter because the flared part never quite fell on the right spot. A-line and Trumpet were the most flattering and accentuated the right stuff. As for neckline, I have short arms and a short torso, so I went with a sweetheart neck with ruching which elongated me a little bit. I think too much fabric and beading detail on the bottom of the dress just makes us shorties seem shorter.

yeah, that's what I figured *goes and cried in a corner* Ok, I'm back. What is Trumpet? I definitely thought about the sweetheart for the neckline. I love them. Well I'm STILL going to try on my Sabelle, but I probably will be disappointed.

  • a-line is a very flattering style, i personally love assymetrical ruching - pulls the eye away from the center of the body & visually slims your waist.  i also love dresses that tie up in back - like a corset, it just sucks you right in!
you can probably have a layer of tulle (i think that's what its called) taken out from the skirting of this dress (underneath the dress) & it would make it less overwhelming for your stature.  i'm 5'4" & i discussed how to get a little less lost in the dress & the boutique owner said taking a layer out (basically eliminating some of the gown's width) would make me look a bit taller in that dress.
if you go to a good bridal shop she will be able to show you exactly what looks great on you.
also when you go to the boutiques try on a dress or 2 like this - if you were to count it out before seeing it on you'll always wonder how it would look.  the boutique owner completely cut out anything with a full skirt & lots of tulle for me to try on - at the end i insisted on trying one that caught my eye & it was gorgeous & is now in my top 3 dresses!
    good luck!

  • Pronovias was the designer I went with, and while I'm not terribly short, there were girls in the boutique that were that were trying on dresses and they looked fabulous.  The dresses are also gorgeous and fairly reasonably priced, too.  :)

  • I am 5' 0" with wide hips and my dress is a-line.  I was in love with the same style of dress that you are, but when I put them on it just didnt work for me :( but I LOVE the dress I have so it all worked out!  Good Luck!
  • I'm 5' 1" with a booty and simpler gowns worked better on me.  Things that are poofy or have very detailed embellishments tend to look overwhelming since I'm petite.  The dress in your sig would make me look like one of those cupcake dolls from the 90s.

I ended up with a strapless empire waist (but fitted) all over beaded lace trumpet that successfully didn't make my butt look big.
  • I really like the trumpet look. I guess I just have to go try some on and see what works.
