What's your experience with body shapewear?

I have a very fitted dress and I want to wear some type of body shapewear like Spanx.  But then I found out there are other similar brands in the stores and online. My main concern is that I will need the high waist kind so I don't want it to roll down.
What have you used and liked?

  • What are you wanting to shape-- top or bottom. I've seen the infomercial kind that works really well at walmart, but I think it was just the tops.

  • I bought the Target brand of Spanx and had zero problems with them rolling down and I really liked them.  Mine went from mid-thigh all of the way up to my bra.  This brand doesn't have the hole to make bathroom trips easier on you though.

  • I got my Spanx from Nordstroms and I like them a lot.  I feel like they do wonders for my thighs, but they are a little awkward on the torso. Sometimes it causes a bulge or line in the back...
  • First, I'll do my intro I am new to the board and I am an August 2010 knottie.  I read the posts all the time but never posted anything.

I got the high wasted shapewear from Dillards called fleexes for my dress. It costs about $20 and I mainly got mine so I wont feel giggle under my A line dress. Wink I wore it the other day and it worked fine under a sun dress. hope that helps.
  • The kind I have for when I'm fat and can't fit into my dress pants is from Maidenform and it works great.  They are the shorts that go up  above your waist.  I'm not wearing anything for my wedding since i have a big ball gown skirt.

For a wedding last year that I was in my dress was a little tight so I bought a strapless one that went from bra down to a skirt.  It worked great to get the dress zipped but the skirt part kept rolling up.  Halfway through the night I gave up and left it.

Like a PP said, the Spanx and similar brands work great for slimming, but they just push the fat somewhere else.  So try them on and see how they look.  I had tried one corset type one on for my wedding just to see and it pushed the skin down and gave me the world's largest muffin top.  Haha, not the wedding night look I wanted!

  • As long as you get the correct size you will not have a problem.  I have used the David's Bridal version (the girl who created Spanx made the DB brand) Assets and they are amazing.  I really liked the power up.  If feels wear having a "hole to pee through"  but it was very nice to have on my wedding day.
  • I have Spanx, and I think they work well even if you are thin. They can transform your giggle, and they make you look hard and fit under clothing. The drawback, as PP mentioned, is if you have any fat (I weigh 92 pounds and this happens to me) it will make it more exaggerated in one area.
  • I wore my Spanx when I bought my gown to make sure that it wouldn't push the "extra something" to an undesireable spot.  I have worn the Spanx with other dresses and have had issue with them rolling down and when leaning over to take a pic a little bulge can appear.  I'm tall and slender, but like most women I do have my little problem areas.  It does give you a nice feeling of being held in place.  I do wish they had a conveinience hole for using the bathroom.  I may look in to the David's Bridal brand that Castillo2B mentioned.
