dress disaster

the stress of planning my wedding and taking care of my teething, constantly screaming son has caused me to eat poorly and gain weight. and now my dress is too tight! and because of the structure of my dress it cant be let out. the wedding is 6 weeks away and im freaking out, i dont think i have enough time to lose enough weight to fit into the dress and i cant afford to start over and buy a new one!

[QUOTE]For the next 6 weeks you are going to have to exercise some serious self control and discipline. Eat healthy.  Vegetables, chicken, and lean protein are your friends.  Whole grain breads.  Water with meals. Cut out alcohol, sweets, desserts, fast food.  Watch your sodium intake - if it's super salty, avoid.  Your dress AND your skin will thank you. Do not skip meals, and be sure to consume protein with every meal.  Take a multivitamin.  No food after 9pm. Hit the gym!  30 minutes of cardio as many times a week as you can manage.  Break a sweat.  Try the treadmill, speed 3.0-4.0, incline at least 4.0, up to 12.0 if you can manage.  The elliptical burns a lot of calories - try the interval setting. Good luck!  You can do it!

  • can they add a corset back to the dress? i just seen on girl meets gown that they were going to do this bc a dress was too small and couldnt be let out. just a thought.

  • I liked the Jillian Michaels 30 day shread...i do it at night once my son is in bed....20 mins a day for 30 days and lose up to 20 lbs. all you need is the DVD(12 bucks at walmart) and a set of 2lb weights. On a side note when my son was teething....he calmed down a lot by eating a freeze pop...it cooled off his gums and he loved it. Good Luck.

  • definitely do everything everyone above suggested and if you're having trouble getting out of the house because your son is little just wait till his nap time and get on the floor for some pilates!!. It especially helps the mid-section area. I do the Windsor Pilates 20min advanced body slimming workout. you can download it off of limewire or something like it for free!
  • I lost an amazing amount of weight with the South Beach diet!  It truly is an amazing diet that is so healthy for your heart!

As hard as it is, NO carbs and sugars (This includes fruits) for 2 weeks, minimum.  (I lost my first 10 lbs in this 2 week period.)  Then after that slowly introduce 1 slow burning carb (think whole grains) OR one healthy sugar (melon, low sugar fruits) per day.  The weight will just peel off.

Do your best to purge your fridge and cuboards of grabby snacks like chips, cookies, pastries, ect.  Replace those with natural PB or natural almond butter to spread on celery.  Or buy a couple bags of baby carrots and dip them in natural PB instead of dressing (Soo good!)  Replace salad dresings with salsa. Have a handful of almonds or peanuts instead of chips.  Or you can even have a sugar free jello or pudding if you are craving sweet.

One thing to keep in the back of your head....Your body burns in this order: Sugar,  Carbs, Fat Protein.  Eliminiate the sugar and carbs, your body has no choice but to burn the fat!

Good luck with the teething little one!  Frozen waffles were a life saver for my son!
  • i'm on the hcg diet....it's super strict as far as what you eat. it cost me $120. i have not worked out once and i've lost 12.2 lbs in 14 days

  • If you cut out 500 calories a day out of your diet, that is 3500 calories/week which is a pound of weight loss, if you add a TON of H20 and walking and cut down salt, that should help you lose more faster... a healthy weight loss is 2 lbs per week, which is abou t12 lbs by the time your wedding is here.

I understand that you can't afford a new dress, can you afford a baby sitter for an hour or two a day to workout really hard? You will be able to fit into your dress comfortably, you still have time, keep your chin up!!

  • I don't have a lot to add, but make sure that you don't force yourself to eat only things you think of as "boring," and don't eat the same food all the time. I find being bored with what I eat makes me more likely to cheat on my diet.

Try keeping broths, noodles, and interesting veggies around -- you can use them to make quick soups for yourself instead of eating something frozen. You can vary the broths and veggies so you don't get tired of it, and soup is a good comfort food. :)

  • The only advice I have is pick a program and stick with it and you'll see results. You can do it!!
  • If working out is easier at home (and I imagine it is, with a teething child), try subscribing to Netflix, if you don't already. They have workout/yoga/pilates videos available on Watch Instantly, so you can just watch them at home. Good luck, I'm sure you'll look fabulous. :)
  • Hi,

There is some great advice up there - in particular, relax! Easier said than done, yes, but take a few moments to just breathe and assess the situation.
I'm a bit of an organisation freak, so my advice is to break down your plan into small steps that you can achieve.
First of all, remove everything unhealthy and "cheating" out of your house, right now! As was posted above, if it's not there, you can't eat it!
Second, choose your nutrition plan. Whether you want to follow an organised diet plan like South Beach (which I tried and did like, although I kept in the fruit and wholegrains initially because I was exercising a lot), or if you want to go holistic and assess things yourself (i.e. cut out processed sugars/carbs, lower fruit intake, increase vegetables, increase protein, decrease carbs and only wholegrain).
Third, go shopping and buy foods for your nutrition plan. And the rest of your family can suck it and support you and eat the same food. There are fantastic recipe sites online that will help you make delicious healthy foods, a lot to do with herbs and spices and trying new methods.
Fourth, decide on an exercise plan. Cardio is great - walking, jogging, cycling, rowing, boxing, pilates; intervals tax your cardio system and stop it from getting complacent by shocking it regularly and you'll burn more. Strech and relax with yoga - great for your core and posture which will make you appear thinner immediately. See if there are DVDs or classes you can attend to mix it up and make it fun, maybe take baby out on walks with you? Fresh air is great and the added resistance of baby in pram will do wonders. Definitely include resistance to your workout and full body resistance if possible - squats with weights in your arms, lunge with arm press, anything on a Swiss Ball.
Fifth, tell your FI and family that you need their support. Ask them to leave unhealthy foods away from the house. Ask them to help you take the time to exercise - see if someone can look after baby meanwhile? It is in everybody's best interest that you look after yourself and they should support you.
Sixth, just do it. When you don't feel like it, when you don't see results yet, when all you can think of is a chocolate bar, think of your dress and go exercise/say no/stick to it.

Wish you all the best. We're confident you can do it. 6 weeks is heaps of time and you're going to look stunning!

It might be worth it to sign up for a weight loss program like Weight Watchers. While eating well and exercising is the key to losing weight, and not something you need a fancy plan for, I found that Weight Watchers helped me be much better aware of what I was eating and whether it was good for me or not.

I did it last year and lost about 20 lbs in 2 months, which is actually a little faster than ideal. I didn't mean to go that fast, but I started exercising around the same time and didn't adjust my food intake to cover the extra calories.

If you already have a Wii, it might be worthwhile to pick up a copy of EA Sports Active. If you have kids you'll probably have a harder time finding time to work out, and the EA Sports game is a pretty decent workout which you can do at home, after the kids have gone to bed, while you're waiting for something to cook, etc. WiiFit is fun and good for tracking your weight, but you won't break a sweat as much as with EA Sports.
  • I read through some of the posts and i was not sure if someone shared this with you.  I agree on healthy dieting prior to the wedding.  There are now several new undergarments on the market that can "pull you in" and give you a slimmer look.  Try the Body Shaper-https://www.buythebodyshaper.com/cgi-bin/product.isc.
Also try Ardyss Body Magic.  Supposedly it takes t 10lbs off.

They may help and there are plenty of others.  Go to one of the large department stores (Macy's, Bloomingdales or Dillards...maybe even Sears) and see what garments are out there.

I think between healthy dieting and one of these garmets, you can get into that dress.

    All the best,

    Melanie

  • Try Herbalife. It works I promise it is working for me!
  • You can do it! I have a few pounds to take off before the wedding too (of course I have a while yet to do so). This will be great for the dress, and for you! Listen to all of the advice listed before... they are right! It's possible. Especially if you want it bad enough. Just remember the beautiful dress you want to step into everytime that Hersheys Kiss looks good :) Good Luck!
  • There has already been such great advice on here and I'm hesitant in giving this information because I've never tried this diet but I visited some friends in PA recently and they all swear by this one.  It's called Medifast and it is one of those types of diets where you have to buy the food and I think it can be pretty expensive.  However, it really does work...one of my friend's sisters did it and she lost like 30 pounds in a few months and looked fantastic.  Here is the website:
http://www.medifast1.com/ and I also found reviews for it on this website: http://www.dietsinreview.com/diets/Medifast/. Maybe the Diets in Review website would be good to use to check any of the other diets that people have been mentioning.  Personally, I have used Weight Watchers in the past and it works best for me especially since it really teaches you about portion control and you can continue to use it even if you aren't really on the program or going to the meetings.  Hope this helps and best of luck!

If you are loosing weight and not exercising, that is not healthy.  The only true way to healthy weight loss is diet and exercise.

  • A couple people mentioned these before:

I've heard the HCG diet is fantastic, you basically lose a pound a day, but it's rather extreme... I think it's about 500 calories a day (lean meat and veggies all the way)... With a vitamin supplement that makes up for the measly 500 calories.

I've just started the 30-day Shred and I've heard of people losing a whole bunch... maybe like 20 pounds a month, but it isn't easy!
  • Good advice for healthy eating here, and I second the Netflix recommendation for exercise videos. They don't have a lot, but the ones they have are good--fun and a real workout (also, a low-impact workout, which is great). You can do it! And yes, cut the stress--that's probably the major reason for reaching for the food anyway. One of my bridesmaids told me to do something every day that relaxes me. It surprises me how hard that is, but only makes the advice that much more poignant.
  • I second HCG.

I've lost a bunch of weight on it too. About 18lbs in 20 days.
You can get homeopathic HCG in 5 days from changesforlife.net

  • I take Stacker 2.  Take it after you eat and drink a bucket of water.  They give you a ton of energy (helps with the workout) but if you do not drink enough water you will get dizzy.
  • I cant help you with your weighloss I have the same issue 2 kids and alot of stress and a Fiance in the Navy who is never home. But I can say Freeze pops (or ice pops) are a great thing for teething babies and Also There are teething tablets they are a heavensent!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I had them with my first born. I know you can get them at walmart and target Hyland's Teething tablets there like 4.oo for a bottle and they work great and they dont taste bad and they melt my son loves them .
  • Everyone is right, this is very doable...you can drop weight in a healthy way quickly. My personal choice is weight watcher to maintain my diet and crossfit or some variation of that for my exercise.

Ask yourself a couple questions before you decide to eat something:
    1) Am I eating because I am actually hungry?
    2) Is what I am about to eat my best healthiest option at this moment?

I have found asking myself these two things have changed my way of thinking, I am a stress eater, I love comfort food but you only have one body for the rest of your life. Make sure you eat for the right reason and you are eating the right thing when you are hungry.

You got this one girl! You can do it!
  • i totally agree with what everyone else has said, ESPECIALLY about keeping your meals high protein. this doesn't have to mean lots of meat, though. check out www.sparkpeople.com. it's a great way to track your calories and protein and everything, and they have good recipes. also, www.vegetariantimes.com has a lot of great recipes and includes the nutritional info. i think that will give you lots of ideas that aren't "boring". good luck!

  • Good luck - you can do it!! There's lots of great advice here - be sensible, eat properly but be healthy and cut fat where you can... and I SOOOOO agree with the 30 Day Shred person - I love love love that video! As do 5 of my friends. It's 20 minutes and I saw results in 2 wekks doing it every other day. You'll be great and look wonderful!!!
  • if all else fails try a body magic
  • Please let us know what happens! i just want to second the South Beach Diet but with the time constraints you've got, it might be better to start with an Atkins' induction phase which limits you to JUST protein the first two weeks. There are copies of it on Amazon for pretty cheap. Jillian Michael's program for fitness is great too. Another thing  you need to know is that all the stress is causing you to pump cortisol into your system that is also going to make you heavier, but there are weight loss supplements specifically for that that you can find at Wal Mart. i know you've got a short amount of time, so make a decision about a FAST diet (even if it wouldn't be healthy long term, it would get you into your dress and then you can do a healthier diet and South Beach is actually good for you) and as much time as you can working out, especially doing cardio. Good luck chica! I'll be thinking about you!

    I love p90x!

If that's too much, then I also like Jillian's Banish Fat Boost Metabolism workout DVD, and No More Trouble Zones DVD...
Start eating clean, don't starve yourself, otherwise your body will go into starvation mode and try to hold on to every gram of fat, rather than disposing of it...
Eating clean is lean protein, good complex carbs (like veggies, etc), and not eating anything processed. I guarantee you will see results... If you have time, you can google eating clean or pick up a copy or Tosca Reno's book about eating clean.

I wish you the best of luck!!!Wink

  • Yes they can add a corset back to a dress but if it's 6 weeks until her wedding she's probably already done with the alterations.
