Dress- How tight is too tight?

I just had my second fitting and was surprised at how tight the dress felt on me, and I didn't gain any weight. It can be zipped up about 2/3s of the way without any effort, but the seamstress had to pull the back together and clasp it before zipping it up the rest of the way. And when it's zipped, the skin on my back looks pinched. I asked her about it, and she said it looks fine and that it should be tight so it doesn't fall down (It's a strapless gown).

I'm afraid that the dress is going to rip during the wedding. I'm just wondering if it just feels snug on me because I'm not used to wearing tight clothes, or should I take it back?

do the seams strain when you move your arms, walk or try to sit down?

  • You should be able to move comfortably and sit down in the dress.  If you can't, it's too tight.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • From what you described, it sounds uncomfortable. But like aerin said, if you can't move around freely in it, it is too fight. You may need to see a different seamstress.
  • Well if it gives you what I like to call a "back crack" then yes it is too tight.  Do you really want that to show up in pictures on your big day?  If you can't sit or breathe all that well you might wanna get a little more firm with your seamstress or go find another one.  She's not wearing the dress, you are.  Go with your gut instinct.

  • Your going to be in the dress a long time - you should be comfortable and gorgeous - sounds like the seamstress does not want the added work.
  • Thank you for your support! I should have gone with my gut and gotten it fixed when I was there, but I'm going to go back tomorrow. If she gives me a hard time, I'll go somewhere else. Thanks again!

  • Yeah, you definitely want to try that dress on.
  • I'm glad she's going to fix it but she sounds really rude and unprofessional.  She shouldn't be trying to make you feel like it's your fault for gaining weight (especially if you didn't!) or trying to guilt you about the beading in the top.

  • Your back shouldn't look pinched. I wouldn't feel comfortable if my dress was like that. and if you can't breathe in it or sit down it then it is def too tight. You should not be uncomfortable. Especially after the amount of money you will have spent on everything. You should enjoy it and not worry about ripping your dress

How did the fitting work out?  I was at a local seamstress' shop for an estimate, and while she was fine with me, she was telling another bride who was there how much work the extra beading on her dress had been, what a pain it was to work with, etc etc.  I was so put off by her attitude that I decided not to have my alterations done at that shop - sure, beaded dresses are more work  - that's why most places charge more to do alterations on them!  Don't make a bride feel bad for choosing a dress she loves just because it's more work.

I hope your dress is more comfortable for you!!
