To Veil Or Not to Veil PIP!

Hey Ladies,

I really can't decide if I want to wear a veil or not, I was planning on NOT but then I was watching SYTTD and Randy said "without a veil you're just a girl in a pretty whit dress" and another girl said, she didn't consider herself the type, but when she put one on it completed the outfit, so over the weekend when I picked up my dress (YAY!) I asked to try one on... and now I'm not really sure if I should or shouldn't, I liked the look of it but I'm not traditional or religious.  (Sorry TK STILL won't let me upload pics, anyone know why or having the same problem?  The dialog box pops up but when I hit "save" nothing happens)

Also, did anyone else find themselves slightly disappointed with their dress when comparing the sample to the real thing, I feel like the sample fit me much better but when I got my dress I realized it's because the sample had been stretched and tried on so many other times.  The real thing doesn't fit my curves the same way and it was a size too small!

--EDITED -- I got the pictures to work!  So what do you ladies think, now??----

I wasn't sure if I wanted to wear a veil either.  In fact I decided to wear one about 45 minutes prior to our ceremony.  I knew that I loved the veils that were very plain with no ribbon edges or lace or rhinestones, etc.  So I made a simple, 1 tier, fingertip length veil (I found a pattern by doing a google search).  The day of our wedding I took a quick pic of me with the veil and without.  I decided I loved it and put it on.

You could do something similar.  There are many reputable sites where you can buy an inexpensive yet nice veil.  When working with your hairstylist tell them that you haven't made up your mind as to whether or not you are going to wear a veil, and ask them the best spot in your hair do to put one if you decided to wear one.  This way, after you are all dressed and ready to go, if you decide to wear a veil you can easily slip one in (make sure the veil is connected to a metal comb...they stay in a lot better then a plastic one).

As for your uploading issue.  Sometimes I find that if it is a larger picture (close to the file size limit) it may take a lot longer for it to show up in my posts.  Other times, it is just because my internet is moving so slowly.

I'm not doing the traditional veil, I'm doing a birdcage instead.  Even though I had pretty much already decided on the birdcage, I tried on a few veils just to make sure, and I just don't care for veils on me.  It felt like too much, like I was in a costume.
  • Hi there,
I was not sure about wearing a veil but after finding one that I love, I've decided to wear it for the ceremony and some pictures and then remove it for the reception. My veil is very simple with no trim on it as PP said hers was, but it has three lace appliques going down the center on the back. To veil or veil is really a personal choice depending upon how comfortable you are in one and how you feel it looks. You might want to try what PP suggests since you don't want to spend a lot on something you're not sure you want. I definitely did not spend much on mine.

When I first started trying dresses on, I definately did not want a veil. When I decided on my dress, my mom asked me if I would try on a veil with it just to see how it looked. I thought it completed the dress, and got the veil. On my wedding day, I wore it for the ceremony, but took it off for the reception.

  • I wasn't planning to wear one, then I thought about it for quite awhile and ended up purchasing an inexpensive tulle birdcage veil from an Etsy vendor. I just had my hair trial and dress fitting this past weekend and got to see it all together. I don't feel like a veil works with my hairstyle and it doesn't make me feel like any less of a bride not to wear one.

  • I did not wear any type of veil and felt like a bride regardless, so Randy from SYTTD is a liar for the sake of making his commission. (When else are you going to be wearing a 'pretty white dress' that is long and fancy and has a train?) I did let my consultant put veils on me, since it was her favorite part of the consultation, but I didn't particularly like any of them. My mother also didn't wear a veil for her wedding.

  • I was undecided up until last week, and now I will be wearing a veil.  I do feel that it finishes off the bridal look, but it's all personal choice.  I am borrowing a good friend's veil, so there's some sentiment attached to it.  It's just a plain, cut edge one layer that goes to the back of my knees and really lets my dress shine. It kind of looks like you're going for the same look from your picture. Your dress is beautiful, btw!

Thank you!  And I agree with you about it finishing off the bridal look, I would definitely take the veil out after our first dance and the father-daughter dance, possibly sooner.

I'm just looking at simple 1 Tier fingertip-length veils with minimal sequins on Etsy and Ebay for under $50.  Neither my Mom nor FMIL wore veils so they don't expect or pressure me to luckily, I think it's a nice touch but then FSIL said it looked churchy.
  • I was on the fence at first, but when I tried on dresses, I knew I wanted one. I only wanted something short and simple, nothing that covered my face. My cousin made one from about $3 worth of materials -- plain tulle attached to a comb. I tucked the comb above my low-ish bun, and it only went down to about the top of my strapless dress. My overall "look" was pretty simple, so this worked great for me.

  • I love the look of it with the veil. To me it says bride but thats just my opinion. I didnt want one at first but after the consultant put one on me I loved it and bought it. I would suggest looking on line for cheaper ones because bridal shop prices are rediculious if you do go for one (If i remember correctly some knotties were saying they only paid $10-15 for on) that way if you do change your mind and dont wear it your not out of a lot of money.

I was slightly disappointed in my dress when I went for my first fitting because the sample did fit nicely but I had to order a size up from the sample because of the stretching so It came in big in the hips and bust so I didnt have the same feeling, But I go again on friday to try it on again so hopefully with it altered to fit properly I will get that same feeling.

  • I knew I was wearing one from the beginning (for the ceremony, off for the reception), just wanted to say your dress looks beautiful!

  • I never really considered myself a veil person but I will say once I put mine on I felt very 'bridal' I will be wearing mine for the ceremony and taking if off for the reception. It is def. a personal choice so I would see how you like the photos you've taken of yourself. We are having a very non-traditional, non-relgious ceremony and I do love my veil. I don't think now-adays they techinically go hand in hand with a veil anymore.

Does your mom have an opinion? My MIL and mom both loved my dress even more once my veil was on, so that was an important factor that they were happy with my choice.

Glad to hear from another person who isn't religious, I struggled with my FSIL saying it was "churchy" but I think she meant traditional, which it is... and while I am not, I still like it!

FMIL and MOB didn't wear veils at their own weddings, so they don't have a preference.
  • I'll be honest- the veil is what made me feel like a bride not the dress.

  • Your dress is gorgeous. I think the veil really completes the look but it really is up to what YOU want. I knew I always wanted a veil. I bought mine off ebay for 23 bucks! Its a single tier cathedral length veil with scattered rhinestones. Since I wanted a long one I knew I would take it off after the ceremony and didn't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money for it. I'm glad I went that route too...no its not super high quality but you can't tell until you get up close.

The one I'm looking at is $23 on Ebay too!!  I think I'm going to go with a veil. :)  Thanks for the opinions, ladies.
