Can we talk men's wedding bands?

Hey ladies,

Still got plenty of time to think about this and order one, but I'm curious to know more about men's wedding bands, as in, what are the pros and cons of various metals and the price range.  We'd like to know now roughly how much to budget.

FI wants something simple, maybe like this:

But I'm not sure what metal to buy.

We don't want to spend a lot.

I know Titanium and Tungsten are inexpensive and durable, but I'm worried about the whole not being able to cut it off your finger thing (I've heard that at least for titanium, not sure about tungsten).  FI is super nervous about anything that could potentially hurt his hands because he's an artist.  That may sound like an irrational fear, but it's true.

Working with his hands, however, also means he needs something durable.  Is stainless steel not durable enough?  Does it not look at good?

I know white gold is pricey, but is it really durable?

What rings did/are you choosing for your FI/H?

FI got a Titanium ring. What is the concern about cutting it off?

Well, what I *heard* was that a lot of times titanium cannot be cut off, so in an emergency situation, like your hands was swelling immensely, they would have to amputate your finger.  But maybe I just heard false information?

DH chose a palladium band with a satin finish.  It looks great but the satin finish wears off in about 4-6 months (still looks good but not like the picture).  We take it in to be clean and sand-blasted once a year when I take my rings in to be cleaned and checked.  Palladium is a more expensive metal but it's what he wanted.

Eek, that would be scary. I hadn't considered something like that since FI doesn't work with his hands at all. (Father has never worn a ring b/c of his work). Glad you found that it could be done, Duds.

FI liked that the Titanium had a more "manly" coloring to it. He was very close to getting a tungsten ring before we saw the titanium one.

Regarding cutting the rings off, I did a quick bit of google research.  The consensus seems to be that while tungsten/titanium rings can't always be cut off in an emergency, they can be removed in as short a time as cutting would take by using a certain type of pliers that apply pressure that shatters the ring.  Consensus also seems to be that any reputable hospital in the country will have the necessary tools to remove rings made of any type of common metal.

    Well that's good to know.

We were *hoping* to stay around the $100 range, $200 at the most, so I should probably look at tungsten or titanium for that price right?  I never knew that about white gold.  My ring is white gold, but it's only been a year, so I haven't noticed the color changing yet.

Any recommend stores/websites for good deals?

Well ultimately he'll pick out what he wants, but I wanted to know more about the different metals (he doesn't know much about it either), and I also wanted to have a better idea of what to budget for the ring.

Aha.  That makes sense!  My husband's first band was white gold with an engraved pattern.  It was lovely.  He lost it and was devastated.  Now he has the cheapest of all wedding bands until we can buy another white gold.  The thing is light as feather and totally unnerving.  I can't remember what it's made of......

    Good luck deciding!

FI and I picked out his ring together. I mean really he picked it out and I stood there and gave input when necessary.

He wanted white gold so we got it. He likes the look of it and so I got it for him. It was $1000.

This is not it exactly, but pretty close:

H's first ring was Tungston carbide but because he has such large hands, the ring had to be too, and he found it to be too heavy on a daily basis.

I bought him a Titanium ring for xmas that he wears now.

DH lost his white gold wedding band after 3 weeks ..... Anyways I bought him a new one (the same exact one), anyways it is now insured.  If you do buy him another one - i would highly recommend getting it insured.  While DH wedding band wasn't that much money it was still enough to piss me off.  But the insurance for it is SO cheap, I wish I would have had it insured from day 1.

ETA: OP don't forget to check out overstock and Amazon for wedding bands.  They are ridiculously cheap compared to the jewelry stores. Also Amazon has a great return policy - at least from their collection they do anyways.

My rings will be platinum, his yellow gold with meteor!

I reccomend you look at the titanium it holds up well and can be pretty. Yellow gold, or palladium maybe a good option as well. Amazon as stated has some pretty slick deals.

    So.... just browsing amazon.

There's like tons of sellers selling titanium rings for like $30 or LESS.  And they have good ratings.

    Would you even trust that?

I would just see who the seller is and what their return policy is.

ETA:  I bought DH white gold from their Amazon.com collection.  So I'm pretty sure if you buy from Amazon directly (not from another seller on amazon) they have a 30 day return policy as long as the item has not been worn.

we had bought a titanium ring off overstock and got it and it was too big - and they cant be sized so if your husband looses or gains weight - sol

i tried to sell it here because it would cost more than we paid for to send it back and i basically got told they are worthless

luckily it was only a smalll hit but we wont be going the metal route for the next ring we buy it will be white gold.

i also didnt like the idea that they couldnt be cut off because my fiance is an electrician and thats just scary

My DH and I picked out this white gold and diamond ring. He was very specific in only wanting white gold, even though he could've gotten a much better design if he had gone with a different metal. He wouldn't budge.

But, since he is quite clumsy at work & works with his hands, I got him a second ring from Overstock.com. It's tungsten and $40. He wears that to work & then switches when he comes home.

Sorry if it's already been answered, I am replying before finishing the thread. FI's ring was titanium and $48, so that seems like a reasonable amazon price.

Yup - we plan on insuring his ring this time around.  My rings aren't and I have no intention of doing it (for a multitude of reasons that don't need to be laid out here), but his ring is far more expensive than either of mine and the price of gold just shot up.  This was all about three weeks after the wedding, too.  We hadn't gotten there yet.  Bad timing all around.

I felt horrible at how upset he was.  He thought I was going to be mad at him.  I wasn't mad at all!  Just really upset that he was so upset.  I told him "It's a ring, babe.  It's 100% replaceable.  It's not like you lost our child or something."  Ha.

This is my fiancee's ring,  http://www.zales.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3366452&kpc=1

The only thing I was told about the metal was that you are not able to re-size it so you have to be sure before ordering.  I would asks your jeweler about emergency situations.

H and I went shopping for our wedding bands together (he picked out his, I picked out mine).  He was more focused on the style than the metal, and ended up choosing a ring that looks almost exactly like what you posted, it's white gold.

When we were at the jeweler, he told us that both tungsten and titanium must be cut/shattered off. He said that some hospitals do not have the capabilities for this. We ended up getting cobalt chrome which looks like white gold (matches my rings) yet is very sturdy and durable.

My fianc had a tungsten carbide promise ring. It was fairly heavy, but he liked it and it didn't really scratch. However, he is very into music. While listening to it, he be drumming on the kitchen table and now my table has dents in it. Just food for thought.
