Dark grey tux appropriate for formal evening wedding?

I am getting married on November 20th of this year.  The ceremony begins at 2:30 and dinner starts at 5:30.  I guess my first question is, I've always been confused what to call the wedding.  Is it an evening wedding because our dinner starts at 5:30 or is it an afternoon wedding because the ceremony is at 2:30?  I think this might have some impact on the answer to my next question

My bridesmaids will be in navy dresses and I thought it would look nice if the guys wore dark grey tuxes.  I mentioned this to my fiance who seemed open to the idea but was concerned that for an evening event, you are technically only supposed to wear black.  Is this true?  Thanks!

Re: Dark grey tux appropriate for formal evening wedding?

  • Technically, you're having an afternoon wedding. Really though, people wear tuxes for daytime and evening events.

I have never heard that only black is appropriate for an evening event. But I have also never heard of dark grey tuxes. Black might be your best bet, unless you've already done your research and know you can get dark grey.
  • I think you're good.  I was in a formal wedding a few years ago where the guys wore light gray tuxes and the groom wore all white.  I think black would look nice next to navy blue though.

  • I think that black would look nice as well, but then again some part of me is telling me that it won't go together .... I've tried to find pictures but have had little luck.  I just don't want girls and guys to blend into each other and have the pictures come out dark.  The girls will be carrying orange/red bouquets, so that will probably help.
