Taking a poll

My company is donating money to a charity this year rather than doing the yankee swap thing. We all get to submit our favorite charity and once they draw the name the money goes to that charity... you know how it works...

I have a bunch of charitys in mind but am just wondering what you ladies like??

So, what is your favorite charitable foundation and why?

Hmm...I think I like anything that invloves kids.  Like St. Jude's Hospital or something that serves children with disabilities.

I love donating to the Special Olympics and Hospice.  I was a big donator to various cancer societies as that is what my father struggled with for years, but since his death I have reevaluated the majority of my charitable efforts to more local charities that need support.
I think the care and services hospice provides for individuals at such a difficult time in life is a precious gift to family and support systems, as well as the sick individual.  My father was a very big supporter of his local Special Olympics organizations.  I have volunteered in the past with the organization and feel there's no better way for me to honor my father's memory.
I still contribute to various cancer organizations, but for now I am focused on the Hospice and the Special Olympics.

My sister is an athlete in Special Olympics and I often volunteer and coach. My mom is the local team coordinator so I usually help fundraise for our team...that money helps my athletes feel better :D

Anything that has to do w/
    Kids

    Animals

Lymphoma (FI, his mom and his sister all have it)
If I would do it I would specifically donate to just that one cancer research because it is one of the most under funded.  And the wellness centers they go to are all threatened by shutting down.

    Amy's Treat: http://www.amystreat.org/

This is a local foundation based in Portsmouth. It was started by a friend of my Mom's and her daughter. It helps families at the Seacoast Cancer Center who are undergoing treatments. They provide things like gas cards, grocery cards, tickets to fun events etc. They were recognized by the Boston Celtic's "Heroe's Amongst Us" last year for their work.

My family are huge supporters of this organization. We will be making a donation to Amy's Treat for the wedding in memory of my grandmother and FI's grandfather who have lost their battle with cancer.

We do a lot with Camp Sunshine at work. Camp Sunshine is a camp for children with terminal illnesses and they can go to summer camp for free with their families thanks to our donations. It allows the whole family a sense of normalcy.

As for DH and I we donate to whatever comes our way as much as possible. There's really no set charity.

I worked at a summer camp for special needs kids and adults in maine called Pine Tree Camp. I still do help and contribute when I can.

I also do St. Judes at the store. Toys for tots or adopting a family for christmas. In high school one of my classes adopted a family for christmas, we raised money and did all the shopping. That was probably the most fun and most rewarding.
