Permanent makeup

I just got a press release from a company promoting their services and touting the benefits of permanent (read: tattooed) makeup.

I saw a Dateline or 20/20 segment years ago about women who'd done this and several were not happy with the results - they were botched or they just didn't like how it turned out.

Would you get permanent makeup?  Thoughts?

I don't think I would.  I hate applying makeup, but I like that I can choose to wear a ton of makeup one day and then go au-naturale the next.

Re: Permanent makeup

  • Nope. Can you imagine being an 80 year old grandmother with makeup tattoo'd on your face?
  • One of my staff members got her eyeliner tattooed on a couple weeks ago. She was apparently allergic to the ink and it turned into a full blown infection. After all the treatments for the infection, you really can't see it anymore. She she went through all that for nothing.

Personally, I have nothing to do with needles. Ever. I went through LASIK, but that was done by a doctor with years of specialized training, not a tattoo artist or aesthetician. Plus, what if makeup styles change? If people had done this in the 80's it would be horrendous today.

  • Any - exactly.

What would scare me the most is that they'd do it really bad and it would look terrible, and it's permanent.  Then again the story I watched had interviews from lots of women who were really pleased with their permanent makeup, and that all they really had to do was slap on some mascara in the morning and they were good to go.

    But still...... ugh.

  • Oh good lord no. I have no problem with needles or tattoo guns, but I can't imagine being comfortable with someone using one on my face. Makeup should always be able to be washed off, IMO. The need to wear makeup is not so strong in me that I would permanently etch it into my face. I'm doing good to wear makeup once a week.

  • I can't imagine your makeup would look the same with aging.  Right?  I know with most tattoos, when they're in areas that can get stretched out (look up pregnant ladies with tattoos) it can move inches on your  body and completely distort the image.  I'd hate to think of that happening on my face!
  • Honestly, I think the negative consequences far outweigh the benefit of never applying makeup.  Is makeup that onerous that you really can't take 10 minutes a morning to do it?  It seems like a crazy risk for such a minimal gain.

I saw that same special, I think, AATB.
  • No, no, a million times no!  Can you IMAGINE A NEEDLE THAT CLOSE TO YOUR EYE!

This is why I am grateful for my perfect vision and need never to get lasik.

  • Here are their services...

    Eyebrows
Your eyebrows frame your eyes and give your face expression. Eyebrows that are too light, sparse or nonexistent can be enhanced with micropigmentation.

    Eyes
Permanent eyeliner enhances the natural beauty of the eyes. After the application, lashes will appear thicker even when not wearing mascara.

    Lips
No matter your lip size, permanent lip color can enhance and supplement luscious lips. It is perfect for asymmetrical shaped lips, thick lips, thin lips, or lips with uneven borders. It also eliminates the problem of lipstick creases in the fine lines around the mouth.

    Long Lasting Results
Permanent make-up differs from body art as it is meant to look natural. Eyeliner and lip color have the longest longevity, depending on the color used, of approximately seven to ten years. Eyebrows may need a touch up after two to four years for fair-skinned individuals and four to seven years for darker-skinned people. Variables that affect longevity include the depth of pigment, color selected, skin type and proper post care.

    Choosing a Specialist
Company's master aesthetician has received extensive training in the application and design of permanent make-up. With extensive experience in aesthetic services, she has also received advanced training in chemical peels, microdermabrasion and skin physiology.

  • I saw it too..I have a tattoo..but would not let someone near my eyes to do it. I usually go without makeup and FI prefers me not wearing any...so no- not for me.

  • I wouldn't either. I wear some eyeliner and mascara pretty much everyday, but I find it easy enough to apply in just a few minutes. I think like most girls, I am pretty particular about my make-up. I would be crazy frustrated if they messed up and it couldn't be fixed.

  • My mom's friend who is from Bolivia has her eyeliner and lip liner tattooed, as did both of her sisters when they were younger. She's almost 70 now and it looks fine. Apparently this has been done in South American for a long time and many women have done it. The stories about the immediate healing are enough to make me never do it. Though all she ever needs is a little mascara and lipstick to have full makeup on b/c her skin is pretty flawless.

  • It's weird when people get their lip liner tattooed and then their lipstick wears off.  You just see a line around their lips.  One of my friend's grandmother has this and her eyeliner tattooed on.  You can't really tell with the eyeliner; it just looks like her eyes are defined.  But when we had lunch with her, you could totally see the lip liner.  Not a cute look.
  • I'd never do it. I love doing my makeup differently every day!

  • I would never get it done.

A former coworker of mine got her eyebrowns done because they were kind of sparse. Everything went fine and it ended up looking really good on her. She just looked like she had really nicely shaped eyebrows all of the time.
  • My aunt is 55ish and got eyeliner tattooed on.  She loves it, and it looks great on her.  My Mom wants it, and I've considered paying for it as a Christmas present.  She has trouble because she has to remove her glasses to put on eyeliner, and then she can't see to put it on...

  • I a woman who had permanent eye liner applied both on above and below her eyes. It is navy blue and looks awful.  Especially the eyeliner under her eyes.

Yeah I have to admit I might consider the eyebrows thing. But none of the other stuff. My eyebrows are very light, almost grey, and they tend to disappear into my face especially in pictures. My dad has the same problem even though we both have very dark hair.

  • I think the eyebrows would be the only thing I'd do, too - mine are lighter than my hair, which I color, and it's annoying to get them to match, lol.  Someday I apply too much pencil and they're really dark, other days I don't quite get enough on.

But I'd still never actually go through with tattooed on eyebrows.  It's just too risky sounding to me.

I've seen eyeliner that was really well done, but 20 years old, the line is still thin and precise, but it has faded to bright blue from sun exposure. The blue kinda makes it look 70's-80's to me.

I have also seen a lip liner job that was totally botched and I kind of wanted to cry for the woman.

I'm also gonna sit on the couch of not being cool with needles being that close to my eyes/lips. Bleh.

  • I just have this mental image of the old lady from something about mary in my head right now.

I have trouble when the eye doc puts those drops in my eyes when I go in for a check up... no way I could handle a needle near them.

  • I had eyeliner done on my bottom lids and it hurt like a motherfucker. They had to tattoo me with numbing stuff first and then do the actual tattoo. It also wore off after about 3 or 4 years. I was not impressed with the eyeliner it self and would always end up going over it with an eyeliner pencil anyway. I would not recommend it.
  • Yeah I don't think tattoos belong on your face and make up styles change so I what if all of a sudden you don't want it on anymore?

The only thing I would do is permanent mascara if that existed. I have very long eyelashes but they are invisible without mascara. I always put mascara on before leaving the house. I actually got them dyed before the first time I climbed the mountain - I figured I wouldn't be applying mascara everyday there -  but my lashes are so soft the dye faded out quickly.

  • I'd definitely consider getting the eyeliner. A dark brown on my upper lash line would be great.

  • I HATE IT!  I have cousins in CA and one of them had her eyebrows and lip liner tattooed.  I've never met her but have seen pictures.  It looks ridiculous.

  • Nope, I wear my makeup differently everyday so I couldn't commit.  A girl in high school got tattooed eyebrows and they looked totally f*cked up.  People still make fun of her.

  • There was an 86 year old lady that came in to the salon I worked at that had permamakeup. She had her eye liner, lipstick, eye shadow and eyebrows done as well as a little cheek color. She looked RIDICULOUS, and it wasn't because of her age, it was because of her 90's style makeup.

LOL, that's so true. Makeup styles definitely change over time. Anyone remember the 90s when that dark reddish brown lipstick was all the rage?

  • My stepmom has tattooed eyeliner.  It's kinda creepy.  It's a weird bluish-gray color, though I'm not sure if she got it that way, or if it's faded over time.

  • My cosmetic dermatologist does it.....so I'd feel secure with her if I ever felt it was necessary.  The only thing I'd consider having done is my eyebrows darkened permanently.  I have a few areas on my eyebrows where due to stitches from a past soccer injury the hair doesn't really grow in right so I always have to fill my eyebrow in.....besides that I wouldn't have anything done.  I love playing with makeup and changing my look too much to have something that radical done.
  • My grandmother had eyeliner and eyebrows done.  It looks good on her, and she doesn't look trashy.  But then again, she's had hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of plastic surgery over the years, so she looks about 15 years younger than she is.  She's quite the preserved priness.  Way better than Joan Rivers!

Still, I'd never do it.  Ever!  I'm just giving an example of someone who had it done where it looked good.  The eyebrows are subtle and the eyeliner is thin so that it won't go out of style.
