Re: question for those of who live south of the border...

  • I don't have much to say, but I wanted to agree that people are not "entitled" (good God do I hate that word in this context, but it's what fits best) to taking an entire year off every time they have a baby.

  • Oh, and also?  Of course businesses hire someone else to replace that person for a year.  But that's a temporary position, which means after the year, that person has to find a new job.  AND it means they are paying TWO people (though not paying the one on leave the full amount, still paying something) to do the job of one person.

Yeah, and think what that does to a small business.  My firm only has one non-partner CPA because they can only afford one.  If I went on maternity leave for a year and let them hold my job for me, they would either have to find someone willing to take a temp position or just do without me and do all my work for a year.  I would never do that to them after all they have done for me.

Now, Big 4?  I would love to watch them pay a year of maternity leave.  I'd have babies all the time.

  • When one of my coworkers went on leave, she got 12 fully paid weeks.  Well during that time we were short her position, and one more position, and trying to have some extra staff because we were having some issues.  So we hired someone temporarily to replace her.  Then HR starting bitching about how much money we were getting paid to work the OT to fully staff our dorm and keep everyone safe.  So because they were paying her maternity leave AND paying someone to work her hours, we were supposed to go short staffed and be unsafe to save the company some money.  Umm....no.

I think that's because when you have such a big pool and don't know the names of the people who are paying for you to take advantage of the system, it's a lot easier to take the money and smile. But when you are reminded of all the people who are suffering financially so you can take that year off, and when you know each person's name/family/financial situation, it's harder to accept.
