It will be cold, so bring a good coat and be prepared to buy scarves and gloves and hats from street vendors.  You don't need a travel agent, I would suggest finding a cute boutique hotel (or a big fabulous fancy hotel if you can swing it) with room service near the Park, search Google then try to get a deal either through Hotels.com or through the hotel itself.  Definitely mention it's a honeymoon when booking and while you're there.Other than that, just grab a map and explore the city!
  • I strongly disagree about the tree.  You'll have to wade through a brazillion tourists, and the thing looks more impressive on TV, anyway.

  • I mean it's not my bag but neither is going on a honeymoon to NYC in December.  Lots of people like touristy stuff no?

  • There are NY tourist attractions that aren't holiday themed, and that are less likely to be wall-to-wall people.

  • Generally, I would suggest walking and using the subway whenever you can, instead of relying on cabs.  See Central Park, walk a bit around SoHo.  If the obvious museums are packed, try the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Jewish Museum, or the LES Tenement Museum.  Consider seeing an opera.  Eat halal food from a cart.

  • We went to NYC on our honeymoon, but it was in May so some of out favorite things would probably not be great in December. I loved, loved, loved the Museum of Natural History.  It would be worth wall to wall crowds for me.  Definitely eat street food, and get bagels for breakfast.  We went to lunch at Jean Georges and got the prix fixe lunch, which I thought was a really good price for what we got (I think it's $35 for a three course lunch).  It's probably over-rated but eating lunch in the window where we could see the park was really nice.  Probably my favorite place we ate was P.J. Clarke's, not fancy but SO good.  We also loved the Bodies! exhibit at the South Street Seaport but I'm not sure if it's still there. If you want to go to the Statue of Liberty go early.  We were there what we thought was super early and couldn't get tickets into the statue.  It was still neat to go to the island and see it though.Definitely take the subway.  Get a metro pass for how long you'll be there.  It can be intimidaing at first but I found people were really helpful if we stood around with our map in the station looking lost.  We got the Not for Tourists book and it was really helpful.  The maps were so much better than any other maps we saw, plus we found a lot of great restaurants and shops in it.

  • There's a Tenement Museum?! You just made my day! I had no idea. We're trying to get to NYC soon, I'll have to plan on that for sure.

  • We did NYC for a full week in early Dec a few years ago.   Neither of us had been there before, so we did go for all the touristy stuff.   Just expect that there will be big crowds everywhere and you have to allow yourself extra time to do some things  (Empire State bldg, Statue of Liberty, etc).We actually were able to use our saved-up Hilton points and stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria.  But a TA might be helpful in finding you a good hotel deal.   Other than that, most things are pretty easy to figure out on your own.If you're not too picky about what shows you see, the TKTS booths are great for discounted day-of tickets.  The booth down near Battery Park isn't nearly as busy as the one closer to Broadway.
