I'm probably too late on this, but you have to take the Pepcid because you have 2 types of histamine (allergic-reaction hormone) receptors; and Claritin and similar antihistamines only block H(istamine)-1 receptors, which are mostly found in your nose and peripheral tissues.  Pepcid blocks H-2 receptors, which are found in your GI tract.  Some PCPs treat both to cover you in the event of a severe allergic reaction.You might want to ask your PCP to consider evaluating your neck veins if it's only your tongue swelling.  Sometimes infections or blood clots in your neck veins or salivary glands can cause tongue swelling.
