Re: things that irk me (and you...)

• Yeah, I think I should just be a teacher. I make minimum wage doing Behavior Therapy right now. lol

to be fair...my FI is technically a 2nd year teacher with no masters. He makes about $21 US an hour. Your education and how long you have been teaching makes a considerable difference. When I hit top rate (12 years teaching) I will make about $40 an hour.
• Here I am!

I am irked by my Psych prof who refuses to clarify assignments and actually "teach" the course. My group and I have rsigned ourselves to "learned helplessness" and have told him that this is the only terminology we actually understand from th course, because we experience it.

My salary is public record anyway (as in, you can literally search my name and find it), so I feel comfortable using myself as an example.

Okay, so the requirements for NJ:

You need a Bachelor's degree specializing in a specific field (i.e. I majored in English and Spanish, 36 credits each) plus a concentration in education with field work (25-30 credits). You also need to student teach for four months full time, unpaid.

You need to pass the Praxis test. I know NJ is amongst the most stringent in terms of passing requirements (with MA, NY and a bunch of other states).

You need to complete (I think it's still three, but I forget) a few years of mentoring. You also need to complete 100 hours of Professional Development, most of which is unpaid/unreimbursed. The school provides about 4-8 hours per year. The remaining 20-30 per year must be completed on your own (usually about $70-$150 per seminar).

My starting salary out of undergrad was $38K. We were in contract negotiations, so that was raised to $40K. Involuntary deductions from each paycheck are: union dues, health insurance and dental insurance, pension, life insurance, and taxes. In my district, we also have deductions for the scholarship fund set up for our students.

I believe in NY (secondhand knowledge, not reliable!) you must complete a Master's in Education. In NJ, you are not required, but must to keep up with the COL. Also, most people pursue another degree to have options (for burnout). The top of the salary guide (in my district) is about $80K, but with 25-30 yrs, experience plus a Master's degree. PhD is not recognized, except in administration.

• I would never want to go on strike (or work to rule) to make more money because I think that right now we make good money. That being said, when people talk about teachers having it easy I tell them that they should try to do my job for a month (like really do it, all the planning, all the marking, all the extra curriculars) and then tell me if they want to do it for much less.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: things that irk me (and you...) : Okay, that makes sense. A guy at my job (who had retired from NYC public schools and then took a job with us for a few years) told me this, but I wouldn't consider him a trusted source. Of course, I love that you were doing the education route (sorry you had to drop out)--it's obvious we were destined to be friends :). Were you planning on doing inclass support or self-contained ed?

Yay!! : )

I actually wasn't planning on doing either specifically. Since I already had my bachelors in an art related field, I really just wanted to be an art teacher. But of course, you have to go through the entire teaching curriculum before you can teach anything. If I had to fall back on teaching of any kind it would have been inclusive classes (which is kind of the thing to do nowadays) as opposed to self-contained.

It's still something I can go back to but I don't know if I ever will. I love doing graphic design, it's my first passion so teaching was kind of a secondary thing that I would have liked to have been able to do if I needed to. I basically hurt my ankle very badly, my grandfather got very sick and I was the only person around to take care of him, and since I NEED to work full time it was basically impossible for me to do observation hours/student teaching, so I just gave up.

I was kind of irritated about it, because I feel those types of masters programs seemed to be aimed at people that still live at home with their parents and don't need to work to pay bills or for people who have husbands who can handle the bills while they take time off. I don't fall under eaither category and all I did was stress about it. I'm still happy I completed more than half of the program. I learned a lot and I enjoyed it while I was there.
• Number, there are pay charts for each state. In CA I think teachers top out around $88k, but that's with 15 years + experience and the equivalent of a PhD (or MA plus 60 additional credit hours). To keep up your teaching credential you also need additional education. You can get a credential at the same time you're getting a BA, but it's difficult.

FSIL moved back to Boston and is teaching there with an MA plus 40 extra credit hours right now. Eventually she can top out around 95K I think.

Ugh, tell me about it.

Student teaching was literally the worst time in my entire life (so far). I was teaching full time, working at Express every night and weekend, and trying to tutor just to pay bills. My parents were there to help and I did live at home at the time, but they are very "pay your own way to learn responsibility", so I had to pay rent, bills, etc. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but I admire you for helping out your grandfather.

I thin I'm like you. I love teaching because I love my subject and I love opening it up for students. My good friend teaches math. She loves teaching. She would be happy teaching farming, for all she cares. I would really only be happy teaching literature, although I do teach other stuff and have my cert. in Spanish and am getting my cert. in ESL. I would probably eventually be miserable doing either of those.

My inclusion class this year is one of my favorites. I have the sweetest group and my co-teacher is awesome and, coincidentally, lives in my town. That's the class that always talks about the zombie invasion, lol.
• To go back to the OP, I finished my homework in a combination of despair and barely-contained rage. Luckily, my group members are pretty awesome and funny/fun to work with, but I fantasize about junk punching this asshat prof every day. If we go to Indy for Christmas, I think I might need to look him up and do a drive by junk punch.

Also, my neighbor's "WHOOOOOOO"ing is really irking me. I'm cheating by knotting during homework time, but if I have to work, everyone else should be miserable, too :P. I am the Grinch today.
• I know i am a little late on this...but i'm going to post anyways...

Let's see. Things that IRK me?!

That would be EVERYTHING right now. Only because I just stopped smoking 4 days ago. I'm still in the early stages and even though everything is irritating, im still going strong with no smoking!
