Trip Ideas?

Our anniversary, J's birthday and Thanksgiving are 4 days apart. We're looking to go somewhere but it needs to be within driving distance of DC. Any fun ideas on what we can do that week?

We were checking into a cruise but most of them go to the Bahamas that time of year, and we've already got a trip booked with his dad and youngest sister in April.

We just want to be able to relax, just the two of us. He wants to maybe to go a beach in NC (I love beaches in the winter). It really doesn't matter where we go as long as we can drive. And keeping the cost down would be nice. Suggestions?

Re: Trip Ideas?

  • What about Baltimore? Seaquarium, etc?
Green Mountain WV (or White Sulphur Springs)?
    NC mountains?

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew

  • I went to Wilmington NC last Feb and it was awesome.  I also like walking on the beach in the winter and it was actually in the 60's.  We also went to Myrtle beach which was fun.

  • Missy, great ideas, thank you! I'm thinking NC is gonna be the winner.

KD, what's Lake Lure? Never heard of it.

Jamie, how long were you in Wilmington? Where did you stay & for how long? What did you do?

Harper's Ferry is gorgeous! His dad used to live there :)

And Tide, I was thinking Niagra Falls, too. But could we really spend 5 days there? We could venture into Canadaland, too...
  • Lake Lure is really close to Ashville, my DH's daughter had her wedding there is was beautiful.

There's a bunch to do in Niagara, especially if you take your time, and don't try to cram everything in (like we did).

If you go to Canada, make sure you have passports.  Toronto is only a couple of hours away, and would make for a good day trip.

Money saver in Niagara:  if you go, do some of the attractions on the American side.  If you go to Niagara State park, you can get a discovery pass for about $30 per person.  It includes the Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, Aquarium, Niagara adventure theater and the Discovery Center.  They also do an Illuminations night show at the falls.  At that time of year, the Cave of the Winds decks are disassembled for winter, but you can still go to the permanant deck

  • Thanks, guys!
  • Kinda late with the local voice, but the Washington Post and the Washingtonian have a ton of resources on this. We usually go out to Skyline Drive and the mountains to see the leaves and for that rustic Old Navy commercial feel. (Faker, of course.) Personally, I agree you can't go wrong with NC as it's usually lovely, has yummy food, and a good value for the $.

  • PS - Lake Lure is one of the 2 filming locations for Dirty Dancing. Some of the "lake dance practice" and golfing and driving were filmed there.

The lodge itself is Mountain Lake, in Virginia. It is open, and gorgeous.  My cousin got married there 3 years ago. That might also be doable. It's in Pembroke, over near Blacksburg.

  • I live near Lake Lure and have stayed there. It is really pretty and it's where Dirty Dancing was filmed. It's probably a bit far for you, but we recently booked a trip to Savannah. We found some really pretty places on VRBO.com and Savannah Getaways.

  • Sorry Sco.  I went out for a bit.  We actually stayed in Myrtle Beach and went to Willmington for the day.  We mostly just walked around the beach and did some shopping.  The town is adorable with little shops and what not.
