Sheesh. Instead of a unity candle would you want to do something like a sand ceremony? You could still have the symbolism of two families/people becoming one but not need to involve parents.

we're planning on skipping the unity ceremony altogether, i had never seen it done until watching one of those wedding disastor shows on tv, and we both think we'd find it uncomfortable (we're not big on public spectacles) if we could get away with it without incurring the wrath of my mother we'd probably elope at a drive thru chapel in vegas lol
