So I just started the George R R Martin series A Song of Ice and Fire.....I'm currently midway through book 3. Does anyone have any idea when the fifth book will be released?? Hasn't it been like 3 years since book 4 was released!!
Can you tell I'm really into the series. Oh, and that I've had wayyyyyy too much coffee today.
Tell me about this series, would ya?

The first thing I warn people is that its another epic fantasy and is very very very long with a lot of characters. Its in an alternate reality world but loosely based off of the 100 year war and the war of the roses. Its told from the point of view of many characters. Basically you have a king of seven kingdoms who seized the throne in an uprising against an insane king who committed series atrocities......but no one in this series is clearly a hero. Its all very grey with a lot of intrigue. I really enjoy it because people are good, but still have some nasty characteristics and bad bad guys sometimes have a redeeming quality.

Thats basically what I said when he died. Then I felt guilty becaused, well, he died.....but come on!!! My brother and I both freaked. My parents are convinced we're both crazy asses.
I never got into Sci-fi books. Maybe because I wasnt familiar with the good ones.

Possibly. I've always been into fantasy and sci-fi but I have run into series that I couldn't get into or had no interest in.
What have you tried to read??
has anybody read the final Wheel of Time book? I know somebody else wrote it from Jordan's notes or something. I haven't read it because it has been too long since I read the others and i know i won't be able to keep all the characters straight without starting over. i love those books, but i'm not sure that's a series i can re-read. it's very tedious.

See thats what happened to me. My brother is currently reading it and says its pretty good. I feel like you do that its just been to long for me and I won't remember enough to make it worth the time.
I'm rereading WOT right now. I've finally made it to book 11. The newest one is next written by what's his face, Sanderson. It soooooo dragged around book 8. Like, seriously. And this book? Rand doesn't make an appearance until, like, page 450. Seriously. I do love them though.
Posted by raynes
i smiled when i read this because people who aren't familiar with the WOT series don't understand what an accomplishment it was for you to get to book 11. those are some loooooong books.
apro, i mentioned Ender's Game in my mockingjay thread. have you read that? or any other Orson Scott Card?

ETA: The only other Orson Scott Card book I've read was Enchantment, which was also very good but much more fantasy/fairy tale-y.

It started dragging around book 6 for me. I thought Sanderson did a decent job of the latest one, Mat felt a bit...I dunno, TOO Mat for me. I think he tried a little too hard with some of the characters and they ended up just too much themselves, if that makes any sense.
I'm pretty sure more happened in book 12 than in the last 5 books though. I liked that. And I saw 13 was available for pre-order on Amazon, so yay.
He's also still very angry that Robert Jordan came down with "Robert Jordan disease" and died.
DH hasn't been having good luck with his series lately.

And now those of you who know me can call me a hypocrite, because I'm doing the same thing with mine. But it's not my fault, I swear.
The last page count he had up was 1261 in Febuary, but I think he's cut out some chapters. Yeah, I read his LJ. I'm a nerd like that.
Also, have you heard about the TV show? I can't freaking wait for that to start.
I enjoy Dave Eddings for epic fantasy. He's incredibly formulaic, insofar that each of his series is every other series he has written with new names for people and places. But he's light-hearted, witty and humorous. His dialogue is fantastic.

Sesh, did you ever read the series She Who Remembers by Linda Lay Shuler? If not I highly recommend it.

I've been reading WoT since I was 12 =D I stole them from my step-brother, lol.

No, never heard of it. But I will look into it. I hardly ever have time to read so I like it when other people pick out the books for me.
Oh, and if you haven't read them yet, you'd probably also like the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, and the Sword of Shannara series by Terry Brooks. More modern kind of fantasy, Neil Gaiman's American Gods is one of my all time favourites.

Just to give feedback, H is in LOVE with the Sword of Truth series, but I gave up halfway through. It got boring to me, but I stopped after the most boring book, apparently. Neil Gaiman's all kinds of good Anansi boys is the same universe as American Gods. I also loved Neverwhere.

I liked Stardust too, and the movie was pretty faithful. It made me happy.
Yeah, Sword of Truth is another of those long series that tends to drag a bit in the middle. It's never really been an issue for me because I go through them so fast, so I never have time to get bored. It does definitely slow down a bit though.

The Redemption of Althalus is pretty good too, and it's a one-shot.
