[QUOTE]But JessandTrav, do you really think you (the collective you) are educating the masses when spelling errors are pointed out? For the most part, it probably puts the person on the defensive and / or turns the off completely. And I'm not sure that I've ever seen them pointed out in a way that is not rather catty (and I don't know that I've ever seen you do it), so I just don't buy the "I'm educating them" excuse.

I think it depends on the time of day.  I was flamed once, I believe, for not responding to a heated discussion once and it was only because I went home from work.  I'm all about good discussion but at the end of the day I choose going home to Dawson's Creek on DVD over discussing politics with internet strangers.

    - This (which yes, I know people have already stated, but I'm here to agree <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />). Like yesterday there was a thread where something was quoted from a news article, then a snopes link was found about it and it was discussed. Then someone came in after all that and was like, "this isn't real! Here's the snopes link, see?" It makes it pretty obvious that the person stopped reading right after the initial quote and pounced on it without seeing where the thread went.

    - I also agree that Fever is teh awesome (sorry for the lolcat speak, Cew).

    - And I've said this before, but a pet peeve of mine is the equivalent to "there goes the Sobe!" Okay, you laughed so hard you snorted/spit your beverage. Sure. I actually don't mind it once in awhile, because it's not totally impossible, but when everyone starts saying it is when it bothers me.

Dude, seriously. I agree. I have laughed hard on many occasions at that stuff I'm reading here, but I have never, ever shot a beverage out of my nose or spewed it all over the computer.

I get that people want to convey that the post was funny, and that's fine, but why not just say, "OMG, that's hysterical. I can't stop laughing."

Because that actually DOES happen to me, and I think it's something that everyone experiences here from time to time.

Ew, I hate when water goes up or out of my nose.

Missy, I didn't realize that suicide was being talked and joked about here. I wish I knew where that had happened, because I would have said something.

Also, I know this is probably a majorly unpopular opinion, but I actually don't like that everyone calls Cew a megabitch. I know she does it too and it's like the board's inside joke and is said with love, but I just don't like the way that word sounds. I can't really explain it. Embarassed

I really only have one big one. I HATE HATE HATE when people give incorrect etiquette advice and stick by it to the death. I understand that regions and circles change things and I think it is fine to preface and opinion with, "well it is not proper etiquette to ask guests to pay for anything, but in my culture we do the dollar dance.... yaddayaddayadda." Just acknowledge the truth of the issue at hand and then add your two cents, that is all I ask.

Also, any advice that tells the bride to do whateverthefuck she wants is horrible, terrible advice. Telling her that 'any one who matters' will 'still love her' is even worse. This is not a place to look for a job as a life coach, it is a place to be realistic about the sticky world of wedding planning.

I don't post much here, so these are more for other boards

These have already been said, but they bug the crap out of me:

Repeat post that are only 2 post apart
Giving advice that is the exact same as the 10 people before you.  The question has been answered move on.

    New...i think

Bandwagon responses.  Especially when the advice is horrible.  Stop trying to be liked and state your own opinion.

When someone post 7 new posts in a day.  We really don't care that much especially when they are all pointless AW ones.

I once laughed so hard a mushroom from a pizza came out of my nose. True story. And it hurt like hell.

Oh I've got another one - don't ask for advice about something, if you've already made up your mind based on what you think.

The witness post was on E and it freaked me out I started to read it, saw what it was, and stopped. There was one on another board about a gal who posted a link to a story, and I didn't read the story, but saw enough of the title, and then she said he'd battled depression all his life and lost. The joking is things like I could just shoot myself or things like that. It all skeeves me out, for personal reasons.

On a similar note, J's sister, don't tell me the story you heard at the vet's office yesterday - remember what I went through in December, dammit. Sensitivity!

I've gotta back this one up. Someone did that here recently... they made an intro post to "come out of lurkerdom," then proceeded to start at least 5 new threads that afternoon. It was like the floodgates opened. I get being eager to post a lot once you finally feel comfortable doing so, but that's a little much.

The suicide and depression talk really upset me and made me angry, too.  Beatles, I don't think any of it was on SB.

It shocked and angered me that so many people could be so flippant about people who are suffering and need help.

GOOD ONE! My favorite on was from a few years ago where people were telling a girl to get chairs for her ceremony and some one else comes in and was like, "every one at my wedding LOVED sitting on the grass because it reminded us of a Woodstock type feel which we were going for with love and music..." I will never forget that one because, well, who wants to really think about 'free love' at their wedding?

Ah, the truth comes out then. Perhaps we should bring FFW back? ;)

Seriously, the suicide joking is crap. I get that people have different opinions on how legit depression is, but when someone chooses to end their own life due to overwhelming sadness, you can't deny that it was heartbreakingly serious for them. It should never have to get to that point for anyone. Sorry Missy, I realize now that we're talking about suicide again. I don't mean to upset anyone.

I also hate etiquette double standards. I am sure we all have them to some extent, but some are more blatant than others. For example, how can you constantly hate on honeymoon registries as tacky but then have a cash bar? How can you defend the dollar dance as fine but then jump all over a poster who was confused some one didn't shell out for a gift for them?

This. I hate this. It's like they pick and choose what is okay and what is not okay based on what's convenient for them. I'm sure I did some fucked up stuff at my wedding, but I'm not going around like the wedding etiquette police either.

Preach on, sister Meg! So true.

It's also a pet peeve of mine when people hate on lovefests, but then proceed to bury their faces in their friend's asses about other things. If you don't like the explicitly lovefesting posts (i.e., who's your favorite ___), then don't read them. But don't bitch and then turn around and make out with your friends all self-congratulatory and stuff. Everyone has their own ways of showing their fondness for friends they've made here or posters they like. I feel like you can't have too much fondness on a board like this.

    1) I love you guys (thats not a peeve)

    2) My most hated hated peeve is the second someone posts something moderately questionable about their h/fi - RED FLAG!! OMG RUN AWAY!! - yeah, because life is just that simple, jackasses.

    3) newbs thinking we should link arms and sing songs because were all getting married and should be supporting eachother. barf.

    4) spitting or snorting drinks on your computer. I laugh a lot and I have never in my life lost control of my mouth or nose while drinking.

    5) cew, man I hate her.

I hate "no one's going to notice it anyway" or "it's just going to get thrown away" as excuses to not do something.  If there's a good reason not to do something, then fine, but those are not good reasons.

You're not handwriting your invitations because you don't really care about that etiquette "rule" and don't want your hand to cramp up from writing 200 addresses, fine, just own it.

And I really don't like it when people hate on children's vows and say that they are creepy in every single instance known to man. Sure, there is a way to do it that is on the creepy side, but there is also a way to do it that honors the child and makes them a very special part of the day. The "children's vows are creepy" is my most hated canned response in all of TK.

My second most hated canned TK answer is "OMG YOU CAN'T HAVE A VOW RENEWAL YOU'RE ALREADY MARRIED. YOU'RE A LIAR" when the poster has made no mention of covering up the JOP wedding and lying to their family.
