**Question of the Day**

Re: **Question of the Day**

  • Agreed also on the gas prices.

Oh, and I hope no one chimes in about how much higher gas is in Europe, and how we all drive to much and all the rest of that blah. In Europe, the average American's drive to work and back would practically land them in another country. Also, just TRY public transportation in most of this country. Expensive, time consuming and sometimes near impossible to use. In addition, little bitty economy cars are great for people like us but for families they suck.
  • I agree with everything that's been mentioned so far.

I don't have kids myself yet, but I want to add childcare to the list.  I was reading an article in the San Francisco Chronicle a couple weeks ago about how the average SF parent spends about $1800 a month on childcare for infants and toddlers.  Now, I don't actually live in the city, but FFS... that's more than what FI and I pay for rent on a 3 bd, 2.5 bath house!

True story: I bought a new printer the other day because it was cheaper than ink. (And also, the old printer isn't Windows 7 compatible, so wasn't working with my laptop anyway.)

[QUOTE]I'm surprised no one has said it but Gas. I remember when I started driving and I could fill my 16 gallon tank with a $20. I could also get enough gas to get home home with the spare change I would find under the car seats/glove compartment. I also know it's ridiculously cheap in my city compared to everywhere else which makes it even more boggling.

Yeah, I remember filling my 10 gallon tank for less than $15 when I was 19. And now I have a 13 gallon tank which is closer to $40. No way I could have afforded that in college.

But at the same time, it's like $12/gallon in Norway. And it IS liquified dinosaurs or whatever, so it really should be more than it is... But I'm still jealous of those Venezuela bastards who pay $0.25/gallon.

  • Razor Blades...why are three (or four, or five) strips of metal contained in plastic SO FRICKING EXPENSIVE? $25 for 8 of them? How is that possibly?

[QUOTE]Wedding-related but wedding veils are freaking expensive! Good thing I know the bridal store owner and she let me borrow a $250 veil. Yup. $250 for a piece of fabric and some beads!   I can't believe the wedding industry is getting away with all the shiit they're pulling period.

    This this this.
  • Also, printer ink is made of unicorn blood. That's why it's so expensive.
  • I wish I lived in an area where I didn't have a long commute for work or even for groceries. I miss being able to walk everywhere in my college town and not have to drive for every little thing. Now I commute 45 miles each way and so does Scott.

Any toys/candy. When I was little I felt rich with $1 for candy, or a $5 for a new toy.

[QUOTE]I was listening to a radio talk show this morning on the way to work, and they brought up an interesting topic: things that are WAY overpriced! Bottled water was a biggie. A lot of companies bottle TAP water and call it "purified" then sell it for crazy amounts of mula. If bottled water were sold by the gallon like gas...it would be $8.50 a gallon!! What's something, service or product, that you think is WAY overpriced?

Interesting you mentioned water prices, that's something that was pissing me off that I did something about in the past two weeks.  I hate drinking water but I know it's good for me and I drink about a 2 liter's worth per day.  So I have drinking seltzer water instead because that somehow makes water more fun to drink. :-)  Well, that was getting expensive, $1 for a 2 Liter bottle of seltzer/club soda at the supermarket.

I bought a water carbonation kit of pressure regulator, hose and 2Liter bottle top adaptor off of ebay for about $70, and a "20 pound" carbon dioxide tank from a local welding supply shop for $20.  That one $20 bottle of co2 is enough to carbonate about 500 2 Liter bottles of tap water at home, so now I have seltzer water at a 96% discount, or 7 cents per gallon.  Ok, I'm a guy lol.

I went from one expensive razor to another hoping one brand would have blades that last longer, but the best one I found, Schick Quattro, was still averaging $1.85 per disposable blade (in 12 packs) and my beard grows pretty quick (bet I'm the only one with that problem on here) and I would be lucky to get three shaves out of one blade, more often two.  I started buying the cheap ass Walgreens disposable razors for about $1/each and I get three shaves out of each one every time.  I feel bad about the waste though with a whole plastic handle and razor combo going in the trash every three shaves, haven't come up with any ideas yet on that while not spending twice as much.

  • How about liquor drinks at restaurants and bars?  It seems like every f'ing place I go now a drink is a minimum of $5, more often than not $7 or $8.  I mean seriously?  A bottle of good booze is $30 retail, you can get about 20 shots out of it, so a drink costs $1 at most to make, so lets mark it up 700% because its alcohol.

Why can I spend more on grapes than on an extra value meal?
