Re: What are you reading?

  • im reading the night circus. its a sort of fantasy book about magicians in the nineteenth century. these two famous magicians have games where they each train a young magician and the magicians then compete.it sounds dumb but its incredibly well written and very good.

  • I'm reading Duma Key by Stephen King. It's about a man who has a horrible, life changing accident after which he goes to Florida, rents a house and takes up painting. The things that he paints become true IRL.

It's been creepy so far, but I have about 200 pages left and that's when Stephen King books usually kick your ass, so I'm pretty excited to see what happens.

My husband got the Game of Thrones series on my NC, so I might start reading that when I've finished this book.

  • 1: What are you reading? The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (#2 in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series)

2: Whats it about? Arthur Dent survives the total destruction of the Earth at the very last minute. Now he and he alien cohorts are try to figure out why the meaning of life is 42.

3: Would you recommend it? I really like it, especially since it borders on the absurd.

Also, what do you guys think about doing a thread like this weekly? I would love it.

[QUOTE]Has anyone read A Clockwork Orange?  I read the synopsis and it sounds incredible but I tried to watch the movie the other day and didn't get a chance to finish it.

It's really good! Once you figure out what all the made up words mean, it's not too difficult (though it does take a bit to get used to). There should be a dictionary in the back. I read it in high school and it's been on my list of books to reread for a while now. I can't seem to find my copy anywhere.

  • 1: What are you reading? Technically I have three on the go. One's for class though. It's called "The Night Counter". It's for an Arab literature course. Uhm, I started Game of Thrones but I'm not feeling it right now so I set it aside. I'm now reading the Maze Runner series and I just read a few pages last night.

2: Whats it about? Well the only book I've actually been reading is Maze Runner and I'm not that far into it. So far a kid wakes up and doesn't know anything but his name and he's in a weird place with a bunch of other boys.

Based on the Arab lit course I'm going to guess the book is about someone moving to a Western country and finding out they don't like it. It's been the topic of EVERY book, short story and poem we've read this semester. It's all interesting but I hate reading the same story over and over.

3: Would you recommend it? It's pretty good so far so I would. I'm having a really hard time getting into Game of Thrones which is weird because I actually like it? I just put it on the back burner for now.

Also, what do you guys think about doing a thread like this weekly?  Or am i the only book nerd? I read a lot so I like threads like this.

[QUOTE]Lbarr - it's actually not a satanic cult in Angels and Demons.  That was the one with the Illuminati right?

My fingers were spewing out lies I meant to say like a science cult... more like a secret society of scientists who have beef with the church.
  • avs- I was kind of annoyed with Maze Runner until the end.  Then I wanted to read the next one right away.

I'm liking Game of Thrones too!

  • I just finished "The Beast" by Walter Dean Myers.

I liked it a lot, it was kind of gritty. It's about drugs. I love Myers's books.

I'm trying to decide what to read next. Possibly 1984 by orwell

  • It sounded pretty interesting. I probably won't get really into it for a few days though.

It took me awhile to get into the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo books but once I got into them I flew through them.

    So I should read it?

H read the Hunger Games at my insistence and LOVED them but now he's afraid to read anything else because it might not be as good. Help for him?

  • Sere, have him read Divergent.  It's got a similar feel to it, but I think it was even better than HG.

  • I love 1984. It's one of my favorite books. Currently I'm reading The Inner Circle by brad melter. It's a white house action/drama book. I really enjoy it and would definitely recommend it!

ITS SO FUCKING GOOD!! I loved that book like crazy.
  • Im currently reading On Writing by Stephen King because I had it but never read it (adam bought it) and its small. Im cheating and reading super small books between now and new years because I havnt read as many books this year as I wanted. Next year Im counting pages instead of book quantity because I read a lot of loooooooong books.

I just finished 11/22/63 by Stephen King though (noticing a trend?) - its about a man who goes back in time and sets out to try to prevent the Kennedy assassination. It was really effing good.
  • Sherr- I just revisited this thread. I highly recommend "A Clockwork Orange." The vocabulary is very difficult in the first few chapters, but it gets easier when you get used to it. I really love the way it's written. I never saw the movie.
