I was just skimming the FFT thread and saw your comment about me and just wanted to clarify something.

I have never once said on these boards what my ring cost. It was not 12K, is not 2 carats, and is not completely flawless.

Talking about money isn't my cup of tea.

I honest to God don't remember that. I stand corrected. That was lame, and embarrassing. ETA: after re-reading that thread I remember that being the point I realized that people got really weird about money discussions on the boards and learning not to talk about it. If memory serves me right, I think there was some follow up threads/flames about the topic? But it stands out to me as when I learned that money was taboo on here.

Fuuck that. You have nothing to apologize for. Why is it perfectly fine for people to talk about how broke they are, or how much they saved but you can't talk about what I'm sure is a totally awesome ring without being embarrassed?

Ehh, I like Blue, and I remembered that.

I don't think that the taboo about not talking about money is only on TK. If a friend said that to me IRL, I would side-eye her. H & I do pretty well, but I never would say exactly how much to someone, here or IRL. I think it is kind of obnoxious. There are always people that are going to makke more, and people that will make less. If people see my ring, they can make their own judgements. There are always ones that will be 10X as nice or more expensive, but I am happy with mine.

Totally agree, Nates.  Like, I'll be honest... Blue's ring cost more than my entire wedding.  But, um, I live in MN and she lives in Boston.  That's one other thing that people tend to forget... COL makes money conversations completely irrelevant most of the time.  Hell, my mom got married only 2 hours away from us (only a few years ago too).  She had 350 people and a full open bar for the same price that we had 150 people and just beer and wine.

Exactly Nates. I just try to break everything down into percentages now instead of price tags (like when dealing with Christmas and stuff like that). Instead of saying "ok Christmas gifts will be X amount of money" it's "gifts will be X percentage of your paycheck." Our families make such different incomes that a dollar amount is just stupid now. What sil an hour to make takes my dad a week and takes me 2. So it's just easier to say "take 10% of your paycheck".

I think that would work for wedding stuff too. My dress cost me about 10% of my monthly paycheck which is probably about normal, verses me giving a dollar amount.

The fact that you did and didn't remember it isn't that big of a deal.  In the context of the threads the fact that you answered direct questions makes sense.  And good for you for being in a position to afford such a beautiful ring. 

However, posting this over here instead of in the thread on E was lame.  And it was even more lame that you called her out especially to tell her you didn't do this without checking to make sure you hadn't.  The only thing worse is all the asskissers below who would have ripped a newb or less popular reg to shreds had she done the same thing.  I guess it's good to be popoular huh?

It's the same thing with judging how much people make (esp. based on the job/profession).  I always tell people that if they did my job for a week they would understand why I get paid what I do and why I get 12 weeks vacations. It is difficult to put yourself in someone else's shoes. I am sure that there are plenty of people on TK who couldn't imagine having 21k available to spend period, let alone on an engagement ring. That doesn't give anyone the right to judge Blue (or rather Blue's DH) for how he chooses to spend his money.
