    Im wondering where all these people who are SO OFFENDED by a joke are when it comes to helping rape victims.  If you are that offended and think that rape for everyone is so traumatic that they cant even function when the word is mentioned, then why not go do something about it?

    Okay, well... that's you.  Just because you're fine with racist jokes doesn't mean Wisc should be fine with rape jokes.

    I also hear the word rape in every day conversation, Jess.  Just a few weeks ago a grown ass woman told someone that Verizon "pocket-raped" her with overage charges.  Um.  What?  I also saw a posting on facebook recently that someone was getting raped by the heat wave.  FFS.

    That's fine. And I get what you're saying, that we shouldn't have a 'tolerance' for rape, and I don't think anyone will disagree with you on that, but as far as the jokes go, not everyone will agree with you on that.

    I agree that they're not funny, (but I've never really heard them) but as far as THIS situation goes, with Daniel Tosh commenting to that lady...she PAID to hear him make jokes, so she can't freak out when he says something that offends her.

    No she didnt.  She said many times that people can be offended, but that doesnt mean some people are not allowed to find them funny.

    I have.  I volunteer for an organization that provides support to children and their families who have been sexually asaulted.

    I don't know.  It just does.  And I know that you don't let a lot of things bother you, Blue.  You are very different that way and I wish I could be more like you in that regard.  Your view is that people suck and are assholes about things, but that doesn't affect you so you don't give a shiiit.  I know that if someone says Verizon pocket-raped them it does not affect me.  But, it might affect someone, so it rubs me wrong that someone would say something so insensitive.  KWIM?

    And TBH, those people ignorant.

    Just as the people are that say, the"f word" for gay people, but people are going to do it. I'm not saying that their ignorance makes it ok, but you can't expect everyone to have the same beliefs, morals, life choices as you.

    IMO, if people spent less time getting offended about things and steaming over how hurt they are, and actually work to raise awareness, a difference would be made.

    But that's the problem. It's easier to kick and stamp feet and be mad than to actually do something about it.

    Uh, no.  Where on earth did I say that.  I specifically said MULTIPLE TIMES people shouldn't be telling folks if they should or shouldn't be offended by something.

     I made a point saying one has nothing to do with the other.  You've been raped, and think rape jokes aren't funny.  I've experienced racism, but thinks racist jokes are funny.  I understand that you don't think they're funny, but her comment had a level of trying to shame people into not thinking it's funny either.  Much like the "your mom" jokes where someone replies "my mom is dead."  Okay, well, that's horrible.  An awful thing.  But what does the point of saying that do other than attempt to shame the other person?

    Okay, well, I haven't volunteered with a victim's advocate organization, but I do speak up when I feel people need a little education.  I did tell the pocket-rape woman that her comments were a little insensitive because she was using the word out of context.  At any rate she didn't really want to listen to me though and just accused me of working for Verizon.

    Maybe not shame, but inform the person that this subject, rape, does affect people?  Like, 25% of women, people?  And affects them in a way that is probably large and negative?  Like, losing thier virginity to a stranger or relative, acquiring an STD,  or leading to an unwanted pregnancy? 

    You probably don't know how personally you are offending people with rape jokes because rape is not talked about.  I would guess many people wouldn't know if a member of their family or a close friend had been through something like this.

    Well, apparantly that's why no one else is coming forward... because it didn't happen the way she said it did, so everyone assumes it happened on a different night that they were there or something.
    I'm sure eventually someone else will step forward, hopefully.

    This is what I'm talking about.  For all you know, there are people out there who HAVE been raped that find the jokes funny.  Just like my example.  It's this idea that because you personally don't find it funny, due to whatever reason, that NOBODY in your situation must find it funny either.  Or that people who DO find it funny are only finding it funny because they're ignorant in someway.

    I think humour is subjective. Not everyone is going to always agree on what topics are funny or not. I think some comedians are hilarious, like George Carlin, while others think he's super offensive. He touched upon very controversial topics that were super edgey for his time. Other people might think he's terrible.

    And as for it trivilaizing something serious, people who have BEEN THROUGH those things do that as well.  I know I do, because listen, its not the end of the world.
