Sesh - I love the new tattoo. If I got another one it would definitely be on my foot. Brandi - where'd y'all end up going out? We almost ate at Bravo on Saturday night and I was disappointed we ended up not going. Totally didn't get to creep on your b-party. :P
    Posted by rachers1017
We ended up on the 2nd floor of Biggs. We got one of the couches and set up shop for the whole night.

Bravo's food was good but our service was TERRIBLE. They got my order wrong twice and I was the only one without food for awhile. Once they got it right, I ate so much though. MMMM I might get some takeout for lunch now that I'm thinking about it.

I kind of wish we were having kids just so I could name them. I have lots of (I think) great ideas. Mainly family names. I also like "uncommon" names but not unusual spelling of common ones. I hated growing up as a Sara, there were always 3-4 of us in a class and people always have to ask if I have an H.

I also think FH would be fine with the child having my last name, which will die out in our family with this generation. Oh well.
Speaking of unique names. I have two nephews from my older sister. One is John, the other D'artagnan. We all did a little head tilt "Huh?" when that name was picked out. But he's a cute kid, so whatever.
    Posted by rachers1017
If I was John, I'd be pissed my brother got the unique name (even if it is weird) while I got stuck with a common one. That's how I am with my brother. He gets the unique one and I'm stuck with the boring name. So unfair.
  • wait, rach. How do you pronounce the second one? to me, it looks like orangutan (spelling? you know-like the ape?)

I screen every patient that comes into our clinic and I see some crazy names. Unlike stereotypes ridiculous names are not limited to any racial or ethnic groups.

One patient has the same name as a major movie character, first and last. Think James Bond but that is of course not the actual name. The worst part is that the kid was born after the movies were huge so they had to know.

ETA: I am kind of in the same position as Sesh. I have a boring incredibly common and my brother has a cool Dutch name. People always get his name wrong though so I am not as jealous as I would be otherwise.
Sesh - right? That's what I was thinking. Jenna - we pronounce it dar-tan-yun. I think he was a friend of the 3 Musketeers? I guess my not really dislike but NMS-ness of it is it doesn't lend itself for a nickname or anything. Ah well, not my kid.

My thoughts exactly. Unless they did his first and middle initial.

  • Dj- I LOVE Loralei.

    imageVacation
  • I really like that name Dj and always have. I think Gilmore Girls has been off the air for long enough that most people won't make the association. The child's peers especially will never have heard of it.

  • I really like the name Lorelai. But I did think of Gilmore Girls. I don't think that people in other generations would make that association, though.

And I fully expected XH's kid's name to have extra y's all over the place, so Imrich is an improvement.
Since we're talking baby names, I have a question. What do you guys think of the name Lorelai? I think it's a really beautiful name, but I think it's associated a lot with Gilmore Girls and I don't want people to think I named my potential daughter after a tv character. But I just love the way it sounds. Thoughts?
    Posted by djhar
My brother named his daughter Lorelei. His reasoning was that she was one of the syrens of mythology that would lure sailors to their deaths on the rocks. So you could use that reasoning instead of tv character if you wanted to.

I'm back from the adventure of the white trash wedding. I'll make a separate thread. It's a novel, I'm telling you. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I feared, but it was bad enough.
  • I probably would say, "Oh, like Gilmore Girls!" when you told me the name, but I don't think that's a bad think. I do like Lorelai alot, it's old fashionedy and pretty.

  • Honestly I've never liked the name Lorelai. For some reason it doesn't sound finished or something. And I also hated Gilmore Girls.

I think Lorelai will need a really strong middle name :)

  • I really like Cadence too, it's pretty popular in my hometown. My cousins' BFF spelled it Kaydunce though, which ruined it for me.

Cadence is very popular here as well.

I am bothered when people feel the need to change the spelling of a name - the kid is going to have to spell it for everyone her whole life.

ETA: I also automatically noticed the "dunce" and thought of those dunce caps they used to put on misbehaving children.
