Remember your prom?

I watched a news story last night (on Nightline I think) about how ridic prom is these days.  They had these teen girls on there who would buy their prom dresses in October - for a June prom!  Crazy diets, tanning beginning in January, and basically - the dresses are becoming sluttier than ever - not to mention the costs.  These girls are buying $6,000 prom dresses (wtf!?  My wedding dress was $1,400 and I think that is crazy expensive!), spending hundreds of dollars on hair, makeup, and nails - and this pre-prom party they had on last night included a $10,000 party bus rental to take the kids to the prom.  Ya kidding me?

When Ben took me to our junior prom, I'd bought my dress for $75 at Penney's and a family friend did my hair at my house, lol.

I chose not to go. I was all "I hate everyone in this school, I'm not wasting 300 bucks on spending an evening with people I hate!". I'm still okay with that decision.

Ugh, I iwish I had prom pics.  I loved my dresses to all the proms I went to.

In my school, prom isn't too crazy, but kids do start joking about/semi-seriously planning dates WAY in advance.  Some years, I've seen crazy slutty dresses and other years, really elegant stuff.  It surprised me, becuase I assumed many of them would go for scandalous, just because of television and celebrities.  Last year's prom was the best--the kids just had a great time, there was NO inappropriate dancing (I can't tell you how shocked I was at that) and it was just a generally good time.

ETA: I'm going to prom tomorrow night so I will give a report on this year's styles.

My sister's prom dress for this year was so incredibly slutty.  It was white, skin tight, and had splashes of color all over it and had all these openings on the side, with big, chain-link gold things "covering" the openings.  I couldn't believe my mom bought it for her. 

She got in trouble this year though and couldn't attend prom.  I wonder if my mom will buy her a new dress next year or make her wear this year's dress.  lol.

I barely remember prom. I wasn't even going to go, but my mom guilted me into it and practially begged me to go and have a good high school experience. I got a cheap dress, called up my friends, and we went out. I went with by best friend, who didn't even go to that school, and my closest guy friend. We stayed for maybe an hour, got tired of all the king and queen crap (my school was very clique-y), then left, went out to dinner, and went back to his place to watch a bunch of movies. To this day my mom still thinks I was at prom until 2am.

My Jr Prom (1996) dress was green stretchy velvet that we bought somewhere for $50. I may have a picture or 2 at home, but not in digital format. I'm too old for that;). I wasn't drinking, but I don't remember a lot about that prom. I went with a friend of mine that I ended up making out with a few times, but it never went anywhere. I didn't like him that much. He was fun, though. 

My mom made my senior prom dress was blue sparkly material, in a long sheath, with little white daisy plastic straps. My mom made it. I remember more of that prom even though I was drunker than a skunk after it. My date was my friend's really good looking but mute cousin. He wasn't really mute, but I couldn't tell you his name or anything about him except that he was cute and he had a car. My friend wanted to go with his friend, so it was a total setup. I don't think he said 2 words to me the whole time, and the closest we stood was for the picture. I ended up taking care of my BFF who I had guilted into bringing his recent ex because they broke up like the week of prom. Her new BF was there, he was plastered, and could barely stand up. We had a blast afterwards though, until I fell asleep standing up outside, with my hands all the way up his shirt because I was cold. He had to call my dad to come get me. My dad just laughed. I'd be more willing to post pics of that prom because my date was cuter..

My prom dress senior year was a little over $400.  $6000 for a prom dress??  God, my wedding dress didn't even cost that much. Wtf do these parents do for a living that they can afford to drop six grand on their daughter's prom dress (clearly, I'm in the wrong industry)?  My senior year dress was hotefifngpink and in your face.  I went with a bunch of girlfriends and a couple guys and we had a blast.  We didn't do the limo thing.

My junior prom, I went with my boyfriends (ETA: boyfriend. singular.) at the time. Most of my friends didn't like him for some reason (seriously, I have no idea why, he was a great guy). My grandma bought my dress for me at a garage sale and added straps for me, so it ended up costing about $20. My aunt did my hair and make-up at my grandma's house.

My senior prom, I borrowed a friend's prom dress from the year before (she went to a different school). I did my own hair and make-up and went with a bunch of girlfriends. I don't have any pictures of this one on this computer.

Our school didn't (still doesn't) have a prom king and queen.  I'm kinda glad they didn't - my school was clique-y too, homecoming king and queen were sometimes bad enough!

Our prom had a "grand march," though.  It's where all the couples line up and get announced to an audience, mostly just family and relatives and friends or whatever.  Huge photo op type thing.  I have the video of the grand march from Ben's and my prom.  It is HILARIOUS.

That's insane! These are the girls who wind up on Bridezillas a few years after graduation.

I borrowed a dress for my prom. My sisters did my hair & makeup. My older brother was my date (I took him since he didn't get to go to his a few years before).

I had a blast, and the only money I spent was $50 for our tickets and $15 for his boutonniere.

I went to two proms my senior year. My dress was around $300, but I did wear it to both. This picture is from the first prom which was for my BF's school. His mom paid for the limo and dinner, so I am not sure how much it cost.

I did my own hair and I didn't really like it, but meh.

For my school's prom we went with one other couple. We got a limo and a hotel room and I think it was $150 or $200 a person.

I could not imagine spending $6,000 on a dress or $10,000 on a limo. Those two purchases right there are about how much our wedding cost.

I made my own dress because I couldn't find anything I liked that 20 other girls wouldn't be wearing and then had my date's cummerbund and tie custom made to match. i rented a '68 caddy seville convertible, got my hair-nails-makeup done, we rented out one of the arcades at Pt. Pleasant for the afterparty, and had to pitch in to buy some special beach bonfire permit.

My kid went to her Dinner Dance (Junior High Prom) last Friday. I have never in my life seen more slutty, inappropriately dressed 14 yr old girls in 4 inch heels in my life. My kid wore a black halter dress with white buttons down the front (1950's is) and a pair of flip flops. When I dropped her at her friends to ride together, the girls dad insulted her shoes. Asked why she wasn't wearing heels. Her response was "I'm 14, why do I need heels". I could tell she was embarrassed so I had to drive a pair of my low wedge heels to her school so she could feel better. I can't wait to see what some of those girls wear to Prom. I didn't go to any Proms myself, but I definitely would not have worn something that slutty.

We do the grand march too, but they don't announce, and its just Seniors. Parents are welcome to come for that part and then they have to leave. THey keep them in a roped off area, which I loved! My senior march was spent with my BFF sandwiched between me and another friend as we tried to keep him upright, in fear he'd get kicked out of prom if he was too drunk. Said friend's mom has a picture somewhere of us all. He had one of on each arm and we each had a hand on his chest so he wouldn't fall over. Our nail polish really popped against his white tux. I really wish I had that picture!

I don't have any pics on my computer.  I would have to scan some and by the time I get a chance to do that, this will likely be old, but I will try.

My prom wasn't like that.  I was also lucky, my mom was a hairdresser, so she did my hair.  I didn't have my nails or makeup done.  A friend of the family made me a dress (I have no idea how much it cost, certainly not even close to a thousand, let alone thousands).  It was off white (in our town graduating girls wear white), two piece, long fitted.

I lived in another province for awhile and attended a prom there.  There it isn't all about the dress, its all about the arrival.  They do like a red carpet arrival where all the spectators stand outside and watch them get dropped off and walk in.   So the kids try to out do each other on the arrival.  There were limos, antique cars, transport trucks, truck hauling boats with the kids in the boat, shopping carts, and even motorcycles (I am sure she did not have an easy time driving a crotch rocket in a full length gown).  Then you have the odd couple who's parents just drop them off in their ordinary family sedan. 
The year I watched, the prom queen ended up with some nasty road rash when she fell out of the convertible she was in (she was sitting on the top and they accelerated too fast). 

My province is now banning people under 18 from tanning because of how frequent tanning beds are used by that age group, particularly for events like this.

I wasn't going to go to my senior prom because I hated our school dances, but my friends convinced me to go.  We all went together, prom tickets were $45 each, I bought my dress off the clearance rack at Dillards for $25 and pitched in about $7 to rent a nicer SUV.  I did my own hair and makeup, borrowed my sisters shoes & jewelry, etc.  Heck, we even just went through the McDonalds drive through for dinner.

A lady I work with's granddaughter's dress was $450.  I about threw up...I couldn't imagine dropping that kind of money on a stupid prom dress.  My WEDDING dress barely cost more than that, and even that seems like a waste to wear only one day.  My kids better not assume that I'll be spending that on them...I don't care if I'm a millionaire, I'm not spending $400 on a prom dress.  If they want it, they can buy it themselves...

I'm wearing my prom dress for my bachelorette party next weekend!!

It was long and white and sparkly so I'm hemming it to be short and white and sparkly! I was so freaking excited when I fit into that thing! 

Other than that, I hated my date (we had to have dates at our school so everyone went with someone) but I had a blast with my friends!

Neither does ours.  But they do have a King and Queen of the school at our Winter Ball.  Guess who the King of my school was when I graduated....lol.  I still don't let him forget it.  I didn't really know him back then.

I wonder if that is a midwest thing. Did anyone else have one of those? All the schools around here I know do them, but we didn't in Idaho. As silly as it is I was kind of bummed, at the time anyway, looking back I don't care.

rhon - I agree. I got angry that they were making it out like it was a one-time, freak occurrence. She deserved it. She loved her girlfriend dearly. And I hate that that article says that she was the only openly gay student in our school. Her best friend Justin was openly gay, too, and I had two other guy friends on my dance team who were openly gay as well.

YIO - When I saw that on Glee, I was like "Wait a second...this sounds awfully familiar...". I think I would have been more surprised by that episode had it not already happened in my hometown a decade ago lol.

I went to a hippie school, and we didn't have a prom at all. I was totally OK with that, but every once in a while I get struck by the desire to have a prom-themed party. That way I'd get to have the silly dress without the high school awkwardness.

Maybe my wedding should have had a prom theme.

That's one of the reasons I moved away from my small little cow-town (literally - we had so many dairy farmers, a kid in my class drove his tractor to school everyday). I hated the ignorance that came with being so sheltered. I wanted to experience what life was like outside of our bubble.

I didn't go to prom, because my BF was (a lot) older and wouldn't take me.  I would have liked to go - it was held on the Queen Mary.

But, here's my daughter from her prom a few weeks ago.  Dress $300, hair $25, bout $10, mani/pedi $40

I went with FI to my senior prom (Can't believe we've been together that long) I saw my dress on the sale rack at Macys for $50 freshman year and said "that's the one" and then saved it till my senior prom. My mom did my hair and I did my makeup and FI drove us there in his car.

Our prom queen was a girl who was nice to everyone and we all loved her. Our prom king was a kid I went to school with since kindergarten who got meningitis and a fever so high it literally cooked part of his brain. Even so, he managed to stay the most positive and nicest person ever (even through all the teasing) and refused to fall behind. He stayed in special ed and graduated with our class.
