What are you doing for Easter?

Any plans? Did you/will you dye eggs? Pictures if you did?

Do you do Easter baskets?

My family is weird and we did easter a few weekends ago. We coloured eggs and had our annual egg cracking contest (I came in second, soo close to the trophy) and then hid chocolate eggs for the little kids. The little kids get easter baskets too.
  • I'm doing a beer and chocolate tasting with my husband and parents. H was a little peeved that we're not going to his mother's house, but c'mon: beer and chocolate!

That sounds awesome. FI is working so I'll be cleaning all day. My family is mad I'm not going to brunch at the club, but gas is expensive, and we only have one car. And it's 45 minutes away.
  • Aww, I hate cleaning. Except I like that when it's done, the apartment is clean.

In some ways I like not having a car; that way I have an excuse not to do things with people. Which makes me sound like an antisocial jerk, I guess, but sometimes I just like a quiet morning at home.
  • We're doing dinner at my mom's house.  She makes the traditional ham, and then potatoes, stuffing, and veggies and I'm bringing up mashed potatoes and a pumpkin roll I was forced to buy off of the fundraising kids at school (wow run-on!).  It better be good!

My mom also said that they dyed eggs and are going to have me and Nathan look for them.  I only think she's half kidding.  Other than that, we'll hang out, play board games, the usual.

Probably nothing, Easter has turned into another long weekend for me - we dont go to church and we dont have a family dinner. Its just not something that I "celebrate". My mom asked what we would be having for dinner, and I said BBQ - she didnt look too pleased. She probably wants to continue family dinners, but doesnt want to do the work, she wants ME to do it and im just not interested.
  • We're not really doing anything, at least not this year. Charlie isn't and has never been religious, and only ever did the Easter basket aspect of things as a kid (he's not all that into doing that now). I'm no longer religious, but back when I was, the entire Triduum was a pretty sacred time that mostly centered around going to church a lot and learning a whole bunch of new choral music. Now that I'm not a practicing Catholic anymore (but still with a lot of respect for the religion), it seems disingenuous to me to celebrate the secular aspects of Easter when I'm not doing the rest. For some reason, I feel less of an issue with Christmas, but I think it's because that holiday has more secular traditions for a less solemn holiday, as opposed to the very frivolous secular traditions that surround the most important holiday in the Christian calendar.

Also, we're not anywhere near family right now, so there's nobody to vist for an Easter dinner.

I'm not sure how I'll handle my feelings about all this when we have kids. I may make it into a celebration of springtime and have them plant things in the garden that day, or something.

    That sounds fun! :)

Arwo, I'm the same way. FI works 20 minutes north from where we live, the club is 30 minutes south. So, he'd have to drive me 30 minutes south, drive 50 minutes north to work, then drive 50 minutes south to pick me up later, and then 30 minutes north to go home. Wayyyy too much work for a shitty waffle bar at the club and having to deal with my family. Hahaha.
  • I have a whole week of spring cleaning ahead of me :\.  Whenever I'm off work, all I do is more work (prep work, etc) and clean. Boo.
  • We're definitely not religious so it's not so much that aspect for us. It's mostly just a day to have brunch with our family. That being said, I don't generally like my family enough to see all of them. My Nana, absolutely, I'd live with her if I could. The rest of them, eh, not so much. Especially not without FI. hahaha.
  • FI is coaching a hockey tournament all weekend, I am working at the restaurant. His Granny is having a bunch thing tomorrow, but I don't think I want to go because they make a bunch of food I don't like and try to force me to eat it, and FI will be coaching, not with me.

  • Yeah, we're not religious either--my parents raised me without religion, but with all of the Judeo-Christian holidays (my father was raised Jewish, my mother Catholic). I think my parents just really like celebrating things with us, even if we didn't focus on the religious aspects. I guess in a sense I see all of the holidays as being about family and love and all that. And also chocolate.

    It's cool. I'm here for you. :)
  • I'll be doing a whole lot of nothing. We don't celebrate Easter, so H is going to work and I'll be home cleaning and doing book stuff. So, a typical Sunday for us. But I do miss Easter baskets. My mom put together some awesone ones.
  • I'm having a weird time being post-Catholic, especially since I didn't have a traumatic breakup with religion. I just kind of miss it being in my life, but I don't believe in it, and most people I know are either religious or not religious and don't understand how one can be one, but miss the other.

[QUOTE]Eating chocolate and hanging with FI. The weather is glorious, so after cleaning today, we will probably do something outside. I'm also shanghaiing FI into an egg hunt. Egg hunts were always my favourite part of Easter. One of the last big ones my sister and I had involved Mum hiding a ton off small foiled wrapped eggs in our back yard. We found most of them, but we were still finding the odd one 6 months later.

Eww, gross. Wait, real eggs? Or the plastic ones?

My neighbor was stuffing her plastic eggs last night and I literally thought she was going to break them all. They kept popping open and she was getting so frustrated, it was a little funny.
  • Im working so im missing the annual brunch we do with my family and my SILs family. FI and I will probably just make something nic for dinner that night.

  • Nothing.  We don't celebrate anything other than Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  • Any plans?  I will be celebrating Passover :)

Did you/will you dye eggs? Heck yeah!  Boiling them now and dying them tonight. i'll post pics later

Do you do Easter baskets?  No. My husband thinks holidays are stupid.  BUT I have an Easter/Spring tree!

  • I like your Easter tree, Anna. :) Those are pretty. l

I'm thinking about boiling eggs when I get home, but I'm not sure FI would be into dying them.
  • My daughter (who is almost 18) asked for an Easter basket, so I got the girls some candy, cute socks, and a Target gift card.  We don't go to church (I want to; long story), and DH's children won't come over, so I'm probably just going to cook something special for the four of us.  I'm looking at recipes now, since I have no idea what I want to make.  If I had any energy I would dye eggs - I used to do dozens of them (both hard boiled and raw).

We're just doing dinner with FI's family.

I describe my feeling towards all of these holidays exactly like arwo. There's no religious aspect for me, it was just always about getting together and celebrating with family. So it's basically, eating, drinking, laughing, and spending a ridiculous amount of money.

My family doesn't get together at all. I mean, they barely even talk to eachother so I spend all of the major holidays with FI's family. They're a little more religious but not at all to an extreme.

I haven't dyed eggs or done baskets in probably 15 years.
  • Anna I love your Easter tree!

I'm going to church in the morning and then off to FIL's house for brunch and mango mimosas!  If it doesn't rain I'm going to go on a hike with FI as well.

The heck with him.  My H thinks it's dumb.  I don't even care since dyed eggs are pretty and i will totally eat them this next week.  Dye Them!
  • I might blow them (that's what she said).. I'm looking up ideas now.

  • We are going to my MIL's house for dinner. I have been trying to find an  egg hunt to take DS to, but it looks like most of them were today.

My dad's family dyed eggs earlier at my grandma's house today but we didn't make it so maybe DS and I will dye some this evening, or bring some to MIL's to dye tomorrow. I love dyeing eggs, and DS has been looking forward to it, so I should probably go boil some soon. :)

We will have a basket for DS at MIL's.

  • We aren't doing anything in the religious sense. H has to work so mom is coming over and we're going to do more sewing for the nursery and planting more flowers :)

Once the Berry is a little older H will teach her about the religious parts, and I'll her the story of the springtime hare bringing eggs to encourage life to grow and we'll walk around the yard looking at all of the spring blooms, etc.

Oh, and we will have bunny cake. My grandma made us bunny cake every year (white cake shaped like a bunny with paper ears, jelly bean eyes, coconut fur, etc.) and mom is going to start that tradition. We're going to make bunny cupcakes tomorrow :)
